  • How to adjust the Carter one barrel carb?

Hello everyone, when I owned my 53 champion the first time it ran flawlessly on the old carburetor. Started easily, had no problem revving, idled perfectly. After selling the car and buying it back, it seems the guy who bought it messed with the carburetor for some reason, took it apart and “adjusted it”. I’m assuming he must have really given up on it because he included a used replacement… I want to try to tune it before I take it off since I know it worked so well before. What are the correct settings for all of the adjustments on these from the factory?

    Matt,

I believe all the answers you seek are in the shop manual for 1953 Passenger cars.

I ordered one of those but unfortunately they’ve been on back order for a year or so.

I ordered a shop manual from one of our vendors in Arizona and received it in two days so try to reorder and get your head gasket from the same place

The only external adjustments are: the Richness idle screw, (close lightly, back out 1 1/2 Turns), the Idle speed stop screw (adjust to proper RPM about 600) and the Automatic choke adjustment (lightly close butterfly when cold) very simple.
These will get you into the "Ball Park".

I know how to adjust the choke, but I don’t know the difference between the other two lol. Which one is the Idle richness screw and the speed screw?

The speed screw does just that; try them both.😉

The Idle speed (RPM) Screw is the stop screw on the throttle Lever.
The Richness is the one shown at the Base of the Carb.

In your picture, the Top Cover over the internal accelerator Pump linkage is missing or off.
You should not need to go in there.

That’s how I found it on the car, so someone must have messed with it before the car was parked. Until this guy tore the carb apart it worked great.
