  • Interior Reproduction?

Has anyone bought the machines / stock that Southeast or Phantom used to reproduce excellent interiors specifically for Studebaker? Not trying to bring up OLD POSTS...but many had great results from some excellent craftsmen back in the day....It was my understanding the machinery used to reproduce the interior panels was called dielectric stitching...Where did that equipment go? I used Phantom in Ohio about a year after they opened and were at the top of their game...I am still thrilled by the product they gave me. I was lucky, I guess on my timing..... I'm hoping someone like Stude Int. or Steve Allen's finds the equipment and branches off a new "interior division".

I may have received one of the last interiors René shipped out about a year ago.
This is for my '56 Sky Hawk.
So he still had his equipment to do the trim panel dielectric
    impressing.

The quality was still impressive, but not up to the standards when Bonita was doing the sewing.

Glad you received your interior. I ordered, and paid for, 2 Speedster interiors in 2018. Never received a thing. I was at his shop just before he sold it. He had a lot of material on hand. Hopefully, that was saved as I am sure at least some of it is NLA. After he sold the shop, I visited him at his house. He still had a lot of patterns.

The stuff in Rene's shop in Knoxville is being sold off now. The guy handling the sale said someone is coming to negotiate a price on all the patterns, fabric, etc.

My only experience with Southeast Studebaker was not great-- but I guess I'm not alone. I purchased a complete set of Avanti seat upholstery (in red) from him. I received it and it looked good, but my (experienced) upholsterer was not able to use it, as it was made up too narrow. Measurements taken against the original covers confirmed. No amount of steaming or stretching was going to get the covers over the seat frames. I was never able to get Rene to return my phone calls. Ultimately, I had to purchase new reproduction yardage from Legendary Interiors and had the seats made from scratch, using the originals for patterns. The result turned out great, but no thanks to Southeast!

Anyone need an ill-fitting set of red seat covers?

Is there ANY chance you have a Late '64 with thicker Seat Backs?

That's a reasonable question to ask, but no-- I have an early '63. The worst problem we were having was with the back seats. The way the covers were stitched together, each panel (starting from the left bolster, across the pleats, center bolster, etc to the right) was narrower than the original seatcovers. It was a measurable difference that added up to almost 2" across the seat width! Bear in mind too that we were measuring against a 50+ year old seatcover that had likely shrunk a little. There was no way the new covers were going to fit a standard seatframe. Fronts weren't quite as bad, as I recall but we needed a complete, matching interior set.

I have a Facebook profile and this is all I'm getting:

"any questions call Dale no text [hidden information]"

He might have his settings set so that his phone number doesn't show up for people out of his area or something... So looks like it's message through FB only, or send smoke signals?
                  Whirling dervish of misinformation.

I talked to Dale this morning and told him about this thread. He told me that I could post his phone number. Please be respectful of his time and try to call during normal business hours. He is sorting through things as his health and the weather allow.

From the phone number it looks like Dale is in the state of Franklin (i.e., east Tennessee). Correct? If so, that will be relatively close to me in East Virginia. I will need some uph work done in the near future, but I won't call him until the dust settles.

Please be kind to Dale, he is only a friend of Rene’s and not affiliated with Rene’s business .

He is just helping settle a friends estate.
