  • Questions for champ truck owners

Would it be possible that my truck didn't come with an outside door lock on the drivers side? (1960 champ)

is there any way to get the seat to go back farther? I know the fuel filler is there? any thoughts.

    Thanks in advance, chris

Yup, the really bottom end models save a buck by having teh lock only on the curb side...keeps teh owner out of traffic when parallel parked ya know...

Drivers side exterior door locks were extra cost option on all Studebaker trucks, including Champs.
      Standard or Deluxe cabs.
As far as the seat going back, depends on whether its all the way back or not already.

Bubbastude; Ron Dame is right on! Studebaker for years did not provide a lock in the driver's door. Most farmers in them thar days didn't worry about such extry cost things. Most of 'em, as my grandpappy and uncles, never bothered to lock anything anyway. In 'em days, nobody would steal from their neighbors anyhow. Course, Studebaker felt obligated that the owner could lock up the truck, so they put a lock on the right-side door to keep your butt out of the traffic lane.[xx(] The driver had to slide across and out and in to use the locks.

I'm sure you can find a working lock from a junker, drill a hole in the driver's door and hook up a lock. Course, that's carrying two keys rather than one!!

Or you could do what I do ....lock the passenger side ,leave the back window open when you get out , reach in and lock the door then close the window ! Just have to unlock the passenger side when you return

That wasn't just a Stude thing; plenty of other makes had cars and trucks with the right-side locks only.

Realize also, on most vehicles at that time, If you were locking the door without using a key, you pushed the lock from the inside and then shut the door from the outside while holding in the handle push button. On most vehicles it was easy to leave the keys in the vehicle and lock yourself out.

Couldn't do it in a Studebaker.

Even the four door Larks. You can lock the back doors that way but not the front doors. If you want to lock yourself out of a Studebaker it must be done with premeditation.

My 41 Ford pickup has the lock cylinder on the right side only. Its been said Henry felt it was too dangerous to get out on the traffic side, so this made one slide over & out the right. At least on the Champ, a left cylinder was an option if you really wanted one. Funny thing too new vehicles have only a cylinder on the left now, I'm sure thats something the bean counters have insisted on!

I remember hearing that in most States back then it was against the law to exit on the LEFT! For many years after that those laws held, even though never enforced! [:0]

That would be a good reason for no left door locks!

According to the TW article on 3E series trucks, dual door locks would have been a $2.69 factory installed option on my '57 Transtar - Big Bucks!!

Don't look now, but locks are disappearing from modern cars.

My '07 Monte Carlo (the closest thing to a Stude Hawk I could buy) only has a keyed lock on the driver's door - and there isn't one on the trunk lid. The trunk is only unlockable via the remote entry device and with a dash button.
