I think it was a good deal for everyone. That was a great car for someone to restore.

It was up at least a few days; I believe it went up Thursday. John doesn't post here much lately- he used to write about this stuff. No problem for me, since I look at the listings on eBay a couple times a day[8D]

I'm with Dick. I really miss your posts. One of the reasons I became a regular reader of the forum was the great free education you were providing.

Still here, just spending more time at my second job as a casino gambler. It's cleaner work, the room, booze and food is free.
Also, it's harder to post without offending someone, so I tend to just jump in with a answer now and then.

John, can we be fair and tell the whole story?

A while back the Forum started slipping into a rut of finding strangers' cars on the 'net and making fun of sometimes less-than-perfect workmanship or customizing one might not like. It didn't take long to get to a place where there were frequently threads that started with something like "Look at this poor thing, what was the guy thinking?!?" or "Horrible custom". The threads would quickly fill up smarmy, hurtful comments about someone's skills, or limitations thereof. Some- me included- thought this wasn't a good idea, since you never know who is lurking on the Forum, and it may very well be one of the owners of these targets; and couldn't see the point of hurting someone who did their best, even possibly chasing needed new members out of the Club, or the hobby altogether.

This became an ongoing bone of contention between the two schools of thought. There were justifications raised:

Well, we were just having fun- answered by the lurker theory above.

We're just pointing out imperfections for correctness purposes- unfair, since the subject cars' owners did not ask for it, so it only served to make fun. If someone asks for a critique, of course there's nothing wrong with that; but that's a completely different thing.

Well, I'm not about to be politically correct- I agree with that 100%; but it has zero/nothing to do with PC, it was always about basic manners.

Well, I have a right to say what I want, it's a free country- completely true; you're free be needlessly mean if you want to- but that doesn't make it right.

Inevitably, the lurker theory proved true- a few started coming forward, voicing their feelings. One example was a beautiful Hawk that had the fins chromed. Some made fun of it, and the owner had looked in, thinking he might want to be part of the group; but ultimately was turned off and never came back. That happened a few times. Presented with this evidence, a few got mad, refuse to admit culpability, and protest by trying to pretend some of us are over-sensitive.

I miss John's posts on the Forum. I not only learned mountains of knowledge from him, I really enjoyed following his escapades, Stude and otherwise. I hope to someday emulate what he does with the cars. On top of that, I bought things from him, and he went out of his way to not only give me a good deal, but worked with me on picking them up. As one of the most experienced Stude people, I always looked forward to learning from his posts. So it's sad that he's chosen to "take his ball and go home". But it's his right, and choice- and life goes on.

John, I once again thank you for all you've done for me, and for Studes. I hope someday you can let go of this mindset and go back to sharing your experiences with those of us who have come to love the marque, and the Club, so much[^]

I agree, that's why my posts are down. If I only make positive comments about Studebakers we see on ebay or posted, I'll just be naturally posting less. I'm still here, I'll just try to be more positive in my Studebaker discussions.

I'm all for being polite, but it seems if we take your suggestion literally, newbies and others aren't going to learn much here.
"You mean that 57 cars didn't come standard with 454s and shag carpeting?"[:0]
Or with the famed Studebaker interchangability, a Franken-Stude (or Johnny Cash car) say a 55 with a 60 front end...goes unmentioned?
Not to mention the endless battery tie-down joke that many here seem to find amusing.

There has to be a happy medium.
Again, I'm not saying we should make nasty comments towads some poor guy that is trying to get/keep a car on the road that isn't a 400 point show car.
Works in progress or just simple/average/hard working daily drivers are great.

I'll also politely maintain that the owner of a radical custom probably wouldn't be shocked, disappointed or insulted to learn that a marque club (which are basically geared towards fairly stock cars) may not agree with his singular artistic vision.
He'd just call us old foggies and keep his membership in the Good Guys.
I wonder how many 32 Ford hi-boy owners belong to the appropriate Ford club?
Not many I'd guess. They save their dues for a custon or rod club. So we're
worring (and self censoring) over something that doesn't happen often.
