  • Expected Behavior - EVERYBODY READ.

Recently there's been a flare-up of bad conduct on the Forum, and I'd like to remind everyone once again about the Terms Of Service agreed to when each person's Forum account was created, specifically:

    Discussion and Conduct Policy:
    • Personal conduct is expected to be courteous and respectful to all others, even when there are differences of opinions.
    • Disputes or personal issues with vendors or other Forum members are not to be discussed on this Forum. Doing so will result in the discussion being locked or deleted at the Administrator's or Moderator's discretion.

No matter how hot you are, no matter how P.O.'d you feel, remember that the person you're lashing out at is a person, not just an icon on a screen. How would you react if the words you just typed were aimed at you?

Also remember that Forum staff have the ability to take punitive action for repeated violations. We don't like it, but we will do it. Now...

Mean spirited comments seem to have become a part of our culture over the last decade. I have seen the trend become common place on other forums and mistakenly felt we were somehow immune to it here. I know that there is a great deal of anger all around us. I just hope that here we can put our differences aside. This place should continue to be our refuge.

I expect 'flaming' comments when I post on other sites. But I have found this forum to be much more polite. But if I had a problem with a vendor, I would PM a few of our 'alpha dog' / know it all / old timer types and would be almost certain of getting the help or answers I was looking for.

I agree with Rafe-that's how a PM should be utilized! We've been punished long enough for those abusing the edit for some reason. Can it now return?

Maybe if we had an edit function, people could modify their initial post and delete some of the angry comments that they wrote in haste.

Makes no sense not to have it, and Clark has never told us why not. But he’s the boss I guess.

Bob, it's because people were using it to make rude comments, edit them and then claim they never had. But the Admin account sees all...

I have found the best thing about forums and email is I can reread comments 4 - 5 times before hitting send...... Sometimes we say things in haste that if we just read it back to ours selves a few times our sense of reason would kick in.... I get it .... sometimes we get angry about things and it just flows...... But I know I would like the benefit of the doubt to resolve it privately before it goes public. It is just common courteousy to talk about it in private before firing up the flame thrower. We are supposed to be friends here to advance our common addiction of Stude's. It is just no good for anyone.....the target or the person throwing the flames. Thanks Clark for doing the sometimes difficult things.

"Supposed to be friends"..? We are Studebaker friends, not enemies!

(I keep on hitting wrong buttons on my keyboard every day, just can't learn my since 5 years new keyboard so I would really appreciate the edit funktion to be back again)

I'm an old pro at unintentionally pi****g people off. I try to be nice and, when faced with a WTF statement, just try to ignore it. Cannot say that I have seen rude behavior here. Remember there are those who are offended by "Good morning. You look sharp today." I promise to try to be nice!

Didya ever try to kill an anthill by stomping on the ants? It doesn’t work. Kill 100, another 99 pop up. Better to just pour kerosene down the hole and throw in a match.

                      Clark-
I'm having trouble resonating with your analogy. Maybe I don't come here enough, but I can only remember one or two recent occasions on which someone seriously violated the rules. How many can there be? Just punish them in some way for a week or a month -- and see if anyone notices their absence. I suspect that there are only ~100 or so regular posters, plus a random number of newbies and drop-ins.

Well said Skip. I think the kerosene and match plan is a little extreme. I'm on the forum on days off, and the posts all seem constructive.

Just a thought on the Forum. In most but not all cases, those that offend seem to take a hint and stop posting. Those that don't do end up on the hammer of the moderator(s). I have often prefaced some of my comments that I don't want to start a prairie fire then try to comment in a mild manner. I don't always succeed, but I am a firm believer in the Private Message function.

A word to the wise is sufficient and a word to the sufficient is wise.

Cheers and everybody have a good IDYSD on Saturday.

As someone who voluntarily stopped posting, I'd like to say I wouldn't take Clark's job for any pay. Thank you Clark for what you do.

Without question, business transaction disputes need to be handled privately.

I became good friends with Bob Palma through the Forum. Bob and I used many of the same analogies, terms and life experiences to describe things as we both came from a car dealership and Midwestern background. He had the "Gravitas" to be more generally accepted. I did not.

My thoughts are that there are many who used to post here that refuse to contribute any longer because of the attitude that seems to have consumed not only the Forum, but many other aspects of daily life today. I can't recall directly "flaming" anyone here. But I have been "flamed". If I did step over the line, I apologize.

Having watched all this since the "alt.autos.studebaker" days, all I can say is many of the guys who were around when our cars were made are silent now, even if they are still with us. That seems to be a choice that has been made by society and the Club. Moderation means a side has to be taken. And unfortunately, even if the loudest side is in the minority, the loudest side usually wins. I would never want to be a moderator.
