You will probably have better success by posting this in the "Parts wanted" section and more responses than posting this in General Discussion. Also, the Tech section may provide question and answers as to what is needed in rebuilding the Ultramatic.

The previous Studebaker International Catalog had a lot of transmission parts listed.
I suspect Jim and Corey still have those parts, just not in the current catalog. Have you checked with them?Brad Johnson,

Yes, Gerald is my younger brother. Unfortunately he has suffered a stroke and I have been trying to get these cars all running and drivable, so we could enjoy them. I'm almost done and then he has the stroke. He had a minor stroke a few years ago along with his Parkinsons, My other brother and I have been working get these cars drivable so he can enjoy them. I get the fun of working them and driving them. Jerry loves these cars and does not want to sell them yet. I'm working all 4 of his cars, a 56 Golden Hawk( Jerrys first car, bought in 1971), 58 President Starlight hardtop, 64 GT Hawk and his 56 Packard 400. The shop I'm using is Alberts Transmissions in Canoga Park. The reason we selected this shop is that it was close to home. They have now taken it apart again(under the 1yr warranty) because it would not automaticly upshift and no passing gear. I have given him the manual also and they say they have 45 years experience. I'm awaiting a update later this week.

I'm so sorry to hear of Jerry's medical condition. He registered with our group in 1999 and I met him several times at SDC meets over the next 10 years or so. Please go to my web site Want Ads at
track the remaining 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawks, help owners maintain or restore their cars, help prospective owners make an intelligent purchase.
lick on Contact Us and send me your email address. I can get messages to you faster and easier that way. I don't want to post my address here. I hope you can get all the cars running.
I sent out a message to all the 56J owners who are registered with our group. I got a couple immediately and will send others if more come in. This may not be what you are looking for.
I have one. Would have to be picked up though.
Where about does he live? - Brent Hagen ghawk352@effectnet.com (Oregon)
Note: Brent said he remembers you, and will get in touch.
I have a rebuilt one. Dwayne Jacobson <studebaker56j@me.com> (Wisconsin)

Mr. Baily, I would like to follow your rebuild of your Ultra Matic. My 56 J transmission has a weird noise on takeoff. Always works though. Am torn between rebuilding or adapting a 700 R4. Don't really want to take from the cars rarity. Sorry I don't have a spare transmission. Good luck. Roger Shaffer <rogershaffer83332@gmail.com>

Hello Everyone,
Here is the current situation. I picked up the car yesterday, and it still does not up shift in the D1 position and does not have passing gear in D1 or D2 position after the second the second tear down. But is does work good in a D2 , Low, and Reverse. The shop has kind off given up on getting it to shift properly according to the manual without having another core to compare to. So I have decided to just use it as is and maybe in the future come back to the problem. This is based on my brothers health sitution. I plan to get it cleaned up and drive and enjoy it with him. I'm hoping to get new Whitewall tires so we can be more confident in driving it. So thank you all for the info you past on to me.

Ernie: I think Joe is right . I don't think anyone on the planet knows more about almost every aspect of the 56J than he does. In me own experience, I had my Ultramatic worked on three times at different shops, with AAMCO actually getting it right. After some back-and-forth, they agreed to give me a lifetime warranty for an extra $300. It ran fine for the next 27 years till I sold it in 2015. It is still running fine at last report.
If you decide to give it another try, maybe you, or the shop doing the work, could get advice from

They are about 100 miles North of you. Among the transmissions they repair, they claim to service Packard Ultramatic from 1949 to 1956. I don't know how receptive they would be, if they won't be doing the actual work, but it might be worth trying to talk to them.
