  • 1963 black Avantis with black dash

I know there were a small number of ‘63 Avantis that were black with a black instrument surround.
Does someone know how many and what the serial number range is?
    Thanks Howard

You may be referring to the 813BKV interior option that was introduced around spring of the 1963 model year. I don't think there was any relationship between that interior option and exterior color. The 813BKV option was essentially a preview of the 1964 Avanti interior. IIRC, at some point there were problems with the Tenite wood-grain dash & console panels and Studebaker painted the instrument surround panel and console panel black on a small number of cars with this option. There was some information on this published a while ago. Googling 813BKV may turn up something.

Due to problems with first batches of 3M diloc simulated wood grain application Studebaker issued an approved manufacturing deviation to paint the interior trim black black steering wheel etc
Did a story printed in Avanti Magazine years ago explaining all of this and serial numbers of cars affected
Can dig it out and reproduce here if enough interest

A four page article that John mentions ran in Avanti Magazine Issue 171, Summer/Fall 2015. Avanti interior surfaces painted black is detailed in Studebaker Deviation sheet #5596, reproduced in this issue. There were a total of 73 vehicles whose interior dash panels and steering wheel were painted in black.
