  • 1970's Pittsburgh: Mr. Stocking's Rose R2 Super Hawk: Whatever happened to it?

This was in the early 70's. I saw the car in Oakland, Pittsburgh PA when going to Pitt. Possibly Pete Kliment knew the car and somehow I got to meet Mr. S at the University Club where rich guys sat in leather chairs, smoked cigars and read the The Journal. (I was clearly outside my comfort zone.) Mr. S was a wonderful old gentleman and he knew I was a poor college student. He asked me what could/would (don't remember which) pay for it. I had the distinct feeling if I would have said any number, he would have "given" it to me. But I didn't have a place to keep it (and it deserved a nice cozy garage to live in) so I did not state a price.

Every few years I wonder whatever happened to that car.

I was there too from '72 through '76 but I don't recall seeing that one. There was still a fair number of driver-quality Studebakers around then. At that time, most were just being used up until they wouldn't pass PA State Inspection anymore. There was a fairly large number of Studebaker dealers in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area in the early 60s and despite the rust problems it was common to see them on the road for quite a few years after they weren't being built anymore.

I was there from 1966-69, and visited Kliment Bros. Studebaker in East McKeesport many times, but don't remember that particular car. I do remember a '58 Packard Hawk that looked like swiss cheese. That's what happened to all cars there then.

Tom, there was a rose mist 63 R2 Hawk that my sister looked at and considered in the 1980s. It had the airflow wheel covers and was really nice. Not positive but the name Dick Spivey is in my mind.

Wasn't there one on the cover of Turning Wheels in the 1980's that fits that description?

Yes Craig. I believe that is the one I am referring to.

There was a Rose Mist '63 R 2 at Lehigh University's Concours years ago. They had the Sunraycer , Tuckers and Turbine car there as well! I'll try and find the pics.

I remembered it had been repainted - so it wasn't the original paint. Original color? - no idea. Nice paint but poor tape job (ANY pain on rubber is "poor" in my book.)
