  • What does this serial number go on what car?

The serial number in question is 59V-1237. I know what it is on is incorrect. It is the "famous" 1959 Lark convertible red and black. The car surfaces every so often. I found this car on Phoenix Craigslist with several errors in the ad. The seller lists the car as the 1959 Lark Convertible. The serial number is riveted to the body. In the description he gave a description as a 1953. The car is located in Edmonds, WA. The car has shown up on the forum several times.

So other than ordering a production order, does anyone have access to information as to what the serial number should be attached? By my way of thinking, the car was built in 1958.

Other than confirming it's a '59 model year V-8 built in South Bend, anything more than that would require the Production Order.

It's obviously a very early 59 serial number. If that serial plate really is attached to a Lark convertible, I suspect a swapped serial plate. Wouldn't be the first time.

I've never heard of any convertibles built for the 1959 model year, only 1960-64. The car MUST be a 1960 model year, regardless of what the seller says. The serial number plates were spot welded to the driver's door jamb, not riveted. So, someone had to have swapped serial number plates -- a very bad situation. That would get one in serious trouble in Virginia, and, I assume, in all of the other states. I wouldn't touch that car regardless.

My point exactly. Nobody on the forum or within SDC would never buy for the con on this convertible. I just was wondering what car this plate was originally was on so there would be proof that the car has been altered.

Yup, I just summed up what nearly all of us already knew. Strange as it may seem, sometimes stating the obvious is useful.

I once bought a parts Studebaker. After I got it home the serial number plate fell off. Y'all know the rest of the story.

Here is ONE of the Strings about this Re-Serialized '60 Convert.
Apparently it "Has" a 289 Engine, hinted to be Original without actually SAYING that.

In the AD linked there, it says Price down from $27,000.00 to $24,500.00 !

I would love to see the "Secret" Serial Number, I don't think it was stolen, but you never know.

I have seen the Car when I think it was in my Son's Shop, I saw the fake Serial and never cared enough to look for the "Proof".

And keep in mind that the car in question might be non-insurable. Since we all know that there are zero 1959 convertibles, the serial number had to have been switched. What does the firewall tag say? Not saying a stolen car, but almost certainly an altered ID. Insurance companies don't like discrepancies like that and, in the event of an accident, might decline compensation. Let the buyer beware. Just saying.
Studebaker! If you're lucky enough to own one, you're lucky enough!!!
