  • 1950 Champion VIN question

I own a '50 Commander convertible, it's serial number is seven digits and no characters (4409364). This is reflected on the serial plate and California title.

I'm looking at a '50 Champion convertible project car, it's serial is one character followed by six digits (H402755). This is on the Arizona title, but it has no serial plate and there's no distinguishable hidden VIN on the rear cross member.

Does the different format of the Champion's serial number seem correct to you guys?

Champion Serial Numbers Start with a "G" and following Numbers, as many as it takes.
There were over a Million Champions built through the Years 1939 to 1958.

1950 Champion Car Serial Numbers Started at:
    South Bend: G468,101
    Los Angeles: G851,801
    Hamilton, Ont. Canada: G709,401

1950 Commander Car Serial Numbers Started at:
Assembled in South Bend at: 4,398,601
    Los Angeles at: 4,839,001
Hamilton, Ont. Canada at: NO Commanders were built in Canada in '47 to '50.

1950 Commander ENGINES Started at Engine Serial Number: H370,001
Prior to 1955 Some States (Calif. Oregon, Washington, maybe New York), and others registered Vehicles by their Engine Number.

It will take X-Rays of the Frame Crossmember to EVER get this correct.

Your Body Tag on the Passenger side of the Firewall is another Clue.
    A 1950 Champion is a Year Code 9G.
    A 1950 Commander is a Year Code 17A.

THANK YOU, StudeRich, for the explanation.

I didn't want to cloud the issue with unnecessary details earlier....The Champion came to Arizona from Maine. Arizona accepted information on the Maine title. When it came from Maine it was already a partially completed restomod with a 1950 front end but a 1951 dashboard, a Chevy 350 had already replaced the the original engine (which you're indicating the title's serial could have been based upon), and the body tag and serial plate had been removed for a new paint job that may have also included a replaced fire wall. So it may the body tag and serial plate were lost in that process, or it may be they were intentionally left off to reduce inconsistency and confusion for future inspections and title transfers.

Does it make sense for one to end in a character? My serial no. is reading GXXXXXI. I haven't seen this elsewhere, but it definitely appears to be an "I" and not a 1.

Studebaker used an "I" instead of a "1".
