  • Transporting an inop Stude via commercial carrier

I'm trying to get an inop GT Hawk from Visalia, CA to Walla Walla, WA. The GT rolls and steers but does not have brakes. Peg Trucking initially said they could only do terminal to terminal with an inop vehicle. They said that in order to do door to door we would have to hire a wrecker at each end to help load and unload. Peg is checking into a transporter that has a winch. Can anyone tell me about their experiences along this line so I have a better idea of what to expect? Thanks.

FWIW, I put in a request for a transport quote at a couple of clearinghouse type websites and got about 15 quotes by email. I found that there are several totally bogus websites like www.transportreviews.com. They list brokers with hundreds of glowing reviews, no negatives, and a 5 star rating but have an F rating and dozens of unresolved complaints at the BBB. I tossed out the lowest and the highest quotes and checked the BBB rating for the rest. Most had a rating of C or lower. I ended up with AutoZipper of Redondo Beach, CA and I asked Peg Trucking for a quote due to the recommendations here on the forum. Peg is $225 more but it might be worth it for the peace of mind. Both AutoZipper and Peg have a BBB rating of A- and no complaints listed in the last 3 years.

I've had good luck with uship.com and putting it out for bid as a non-op. It only cost $250 from San Fran to Palm Springs for the pink car from Petersons. You gotta be patient and wait half way through the bid time.

KIWI Transport has been really good to us here at Mad Max Cars, especially shipping up and down the west coast. A family run operation, local to this area. Almost always considerably less than other carriers, and have NEVER had an issue with them (so far).
They have been pretty liberal with taking on extra loose parts, or shipping non runners for us. The do all sorts of odd stuff (motor, parts, Boats, Motorcycles). Cant remember if there is an extra charge or not, but dont think its much if so.

Thanks. I got a quote from Kiwi. $200 less than Peg Trucking. Looks like I'll go with them.

          Excellent Cliff,
I knew Kiwi would be a good option, but what a savings. I thought it would at least be a close call with Pegs SDC discount and all. Guess thats one more reason to call Kiwi next time too.
