  • 1952-53 Chrome Yellow

I saw there's a Studebaker color called Chrome Yellow that's a bit on the dark side, like mustard, & it should be from 1952 to 1953 but when I google that I can't see any 52-53 Studebaker with that color...

So I wonder if anybody here has one & could post a picture of it? Purdy please...

That was a truck/commercial vehicle color, offered for several years; prewar and after the war: https://forum.studebakerdriversclub....express-colors

Not sure if any cars were painted that color, unless some 'fleet' vehicles were ordered with it.

Funny how different the chemes look compared to the cars in reality.
Anyway, "googeling" I just found this toycar:

Fantastiskt fina modeller i metall och plast. Modellerna säljs nya i förpackning.Bilderna är en del av beskrivningen så vänligen titta noggrant innan du budar.V

              Years ago.......
I took a 30's paint chip chart (ebay)...
And a piece of "chrome yellow" painted steel from inside the door ( OE 1937) paint....
Took it to a PPG distributor of mine.. Asked him to match it to an 'off the shelf' yellow paint..
(In case I screwed up something and needed to fix it)...
My PPG guy whipped open his carpet sample book (describing the paint sample book)...
He said that color was the same as 1940's GM fleet yellow (like they painted the sewer trucks).
I looked at it and said "Works for me!"...
Studebaker was in the depths of the depression back then, and bought their paint colors based on price bids. There were no 'custom' colors back then. It was what the paint suppliers offered.....

My friend, Buster Hill, had a 52 back in the 80s that I would call chrome yellow. I always figured it was just a repaint. Maybe not.

Chrome Yellow was first offered on 1937 Studebaker commercial vehicles including the Coupe Express. The truck attached used PPG 81986.

The yellow on this one may be a little 'light', but the original photo may have faded over the years: https://forum.studebakerdriversclub....don-t-upset-us

Nice. all of it! When I was about 10-11 years old I saw a Hawk that I discoverd again less than one year ago, it's a -56, "non-Golden". As I remember it was mustard yellow, but others who only have seen a photo of the car think it was orange, here's the pic:

This I just came to think about now when I read the last 3 posts, but I guess it might have been Chrome Yellow then... Today I think it's painted red metallic.

                            .
That must have been one of the Labor Day meets. I recognize John Prodan's '57 GH in the background as well.

Fun thing I learned about chrome yellow a few years ago. I was in process of picking a color for my '46 M16 and landed on chrome yellow. When I tried to get some paint from my local supplier they told me that using the formula of the old chip, the color would come out a bit pale compared to the chip. It was explained to me that the color shift was due to lead being removed from automotive paints. I did at they suggested, and matched a modern paint chip to the vintage chip I wanted. Worked out well.
