  • Searching for a Certain Studebaker History Video from "Automobiles"

    Hi Everyone,

I'm teaching a survey course on the History of the Automobile and looking for a particular video that was posted on YouTube a few years back but I haven't had luck finding it. Some of you may remember the series of automobile documentaries called "The Automobile" or "Automobiles" which I think originally aired on the A&E channel during the 100th year anniversary of the automobile.

I'm looking for the video on Studebaker. The documentary had multiple commentaries by a professor from a college or university in Indiana and it was 1 hour long. I'm hoping to find a link to where its posted so I can refer my students to it.

Side note: This is not the Studebaker Story movie or the promotional movie by the Studebaker company or the "History of Studebaker Documentary" which are all posted on YouTube.

    Thanks for any help!
    Paul

I'm pretty sure I have this one somewhere. Reading the review left by Stone Dog and others might help. Maybe it's the one you're thinking of....

I did an internet search, and I only came up with the same episode for the Avanti (just the one model, not on Studebaker) that Bordeaux Daytona found. The one he found at Amazon is a DVD, and it's in stock, so you might purchase a copy for yourself and share it with your students somehow (assuming that doesn't violate any rules).

I did find this message from February 1995 which lists all the episodes:

      https://groups.google.com/g/rec.auto.../c/yXh7Lfo92_g

I did a search on the History Channel website and the A&E website, but none of the episodes of "Automobiles" is available for streaming.

          Hi Paul.
I believe you are looking for the video narrated by Robert Stack and dealt with the Avanti story. It appeared on Youtube for quite a while but I suspect it might have copped a 'take-Down' order as it became impossible to find amongst similar offerings. It did deal with a lot of excellent Studebaker history as a bit of a sideline and featured professor Patrick Furlong of Indiana University making salient comment. Also commenting are Arnold Altman and John Hull- both formerly of Avanti motor corporations. It is an excellent video for Studebaker and Avanti enthusiasts. The Studebaker National Museum sells the video and its playback image is far superior to the video on youtube. Do buy a copy- it is well worth the minimal expense to have a better reproduction. This link shows a useful close approximation of the 'Automobiles' video although it's not the one you're after. ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AETmKBI36yU&t=7s
I am a recently retired high school teacher. During the Covid 19 shutdowns enforced by the State government here in Victoria (Australia) I had to continuously find and produce 'busy work' for my Technology Studies (engineering) classes to do online at home and still be entertaining enough to be interesting. I devised a series of Questionnaires for my seniors centered around this video and some other articles. I am happy for you to have a copy of these if you like . Feel free to make contact if you wish.
          Regards

Hi Everyone, Thank you for the replies and your efforts.

Steve Winzar - Yes, that is the video and I do remember the quality as not the best on YT. I am an auto tech instructor myself and developing other areas of auto education other than repair. It would be great to chat - sending a PM.
