  • STUDEBAKER 6X6 MILITARY TRUCKS

There was an earlier posting re the sighting of a military 6x6 truck in the movie " Australia " & whether such models were here so early in the second world war which they were'nt. Last weekend I was in Adelaide for their Studebaker Concours. An owner of one of these trucks had it on display & informed me that in 1944 the U.S government redirected 1200 of these trucks to Australia from the original destination to Russia. Some of these units were operational late in WW2 whilst some were not uncrated till well after the end of WW2. The last remaining units were still in service till the early seventies, hence these trucks are not all that uncommon in this country.

This (above) is a little thing I created from the portfolio of photos sent out by Studebaker in 1943. This consisted of five large prints each of the military trucks and the B-17's (with Studebaker built Wright cyclone engines). The prints were made from artwork done by the artist Frederic Tellander and used in Studebaker magazine ads during WWII. The five above have been made into post cards.

Quite a fascinating thing it was too, just glad I don't have to learn to drive it. Was nice to see you Jim, though you didn't know which one was me. (I was the redheaded fellow sitting in front of you last Sunday). Perhaps we can meet some other time.
