  • Not all Studebakers sold cheap @ Mecum Indianapolis 2022

I looked this truck over carefully and it was as nice as you could hope for...and sold for $30,000, plus 10% Buyer's Premium, so the new owner left $33,000 at the sale to take it home:

If it were a 1955, I'd say "well bought." ;>)

It was definitely a beauty. But, I had it pegged at around $18K at the hammer. You never really know.

As Bob has seen many times, there are buyers at the large auctions with so much money, all it takes is the wife saying "That's a cute one!" or him remembering Uncle Ed had one just like that and current market value is not even a consideration. He just pays what it takes to get it - $33, 000, so what?

I remember at one auction, a couple paid $120,000 for a VW 23-window van. They parked it on the lawn by the pool at their Orange County (4th) home as a conversation piece. He'd owned one as a high school student.

It's not a case of make model-it's all about condition. While I might not find it worthy of the price, others see it as one of the near perfect examples they are looking for. It seems pretty obvious that there are two different markets. People looking for the best vehicles, are willing to pay the price. Few people are willing to accept the argues a restoration. They are, however, willing to pony up for a vehicle they want.

It says its a nut and bolt restoration. Probably cost more than the selling price to do...
