      Nels,

Your original post didn't include anything regarding choice of power train. I believe Al's car is an R2, Automatic, but that's just a guess. I'll send you a PM with his email address so you can contact him.

I like the single color interiors on 64Avantis. I have a 64 turquoise one here, but it is a long ways from getting started on. It is an R1 with AC, and powershift, and will have every option available including am/fm and tilt column. But I have three care before it, and it is very, very rusty. This R3 I did many years ago also had tilt and am/fm.

I remember that specific car was owned by a guy named Steve Kaiser in CA. It was a thick-seat car. I'm not 100% certain, but I seem to remember it had black interior.

Easy for me to say (not my car or money, LOL) but it'd be hard to find a more-original/authentic '64 turquoise R2 Powershift with turquoise interior than the one formerly owned by Richard Vaux of New Hampshire. He had worked for Studebaker in the zone too. I had posted video of his car in this thread, earlier. Interesting guy, too....he had been a TWA pilot who volunteered in 1985 to retrieve the airliner seized by Hezbollah in Beirut.

Richard Vaux, who died July 18, was one of the few TWA pilots who volunteered to retrieve the jet in Beirut in 1985.

I got the production order for my 64 R1. It left the factory all turquoise-interior and exterior. I'm not sure when, but early in its life the interior was removed and a black interior installed, with the roll bar being the only turquoise item left in place; that was painted black. I'm sure that the interior is a replacement, and not the original with a dye job, as I have tried washing parts with solvent and the only thing that I can remove paint from is the roll bar.

The body was completely, and I mean every bit of paint, sanded down, primed, and painted Avanti Maroon, with a poorly done repaint sometime later in the same color. I wonder if it was a dealer color change in order to sell the car, as mine is a late production model.

I will be restoring this car in the near future, and I have sanded off the layers of maroon paint and primer in spots to the original turquoise. I'm hoping to find something removable with the original turquoise so that I can match it. Not sure what I will do with the interior; I have a few small pieces of original turquoise upholstery material that another Studebaker owner gave me, but no where near enough to do anything with.

Is your car a power shift or four speed? Where was it originally delivered?

Sounds like it must be a very late serial number.

The attached interior photos are of my car R5051 which has a NOS turquoise interior that was installed by Gary Johnson a long time time ago. I have owned this car since new and it is also a New Jersey sold car. There were four new Avanti's in town in 1963 , a turquoise and white 1963 , and two 64's a maroon and my turquoise car. Al Basile who has been mentioned in this post lived in the same town. What you see in my opinion in these photos is as good as it gets with a turquoise interior, the interior it replaced, while very nice was a bit faded from the sun.

I’ll admit, they don’t get any better than that. Almost too nice to even sit in.
I wrote Al but haven’t heard back from him yet. Was his car a 4 speed R1? I’m just wondering if that may have been the Avanti I drove back in the very early 70’s. I was in my early 20’s and that car had a lasting effect on me. The first Avanti I ever drove and I was impressed.

Does anyone know where I could get a full turquoise interior? Seeing pictures of it makes me really want to change back to the original.

Here's a 63/64 Avanti, original finishes in and out. I like the color combination.
