  • 1964 Hawk heater/ defroster

    Hi guys-
I mostly lurk here, but could use some advice, or maybe just sympathy, about the heat/defrost system in my GT. I find the air flow to be really inadequate. The aluminum mesh filter is clean. I have reviewed the operating instructions and complied. I can hear the blower working on both high and low speeds. Doesn't seem to matter, whatever I do the system blows veeeeeery little air. In cold weather, it barely takes the chill off the interior, and does a pathetic job of defrosting the windshield, unless I am traveling at freeway speeds, when it does a somewhat more adequate, but not great job. Ironically, in the summer the cab swelters. Let's hear your words of wisdom. Business sucks right now, so I have time to fool around with this.

    Thanks-

    Dave

'Sounds suspiciously like a rodent has built a nest in your ductwork, Dave.

Put on rubber gloves and cautiously dismantle the car's ductwork. Be prepared to scatter should you disturb any rodent concubines, concubining. BP

        Dave,

Have you the side vent open? If not there will be little air movement since air goes through the vent to the heater core, then into the air duct under the dash. I would consider taking off the heater core cover (carefully), blow out the heater core and wash the core to remove the dust and crud from the core. If someone has changed the firewall insulator they may not have cut the hole that the flex hose attached to the firewall. I would check that too.

        Good luck.

        Allen

Dave - Your descripton of the air flow problem sounds as if it were written about my GT Hawk. I'll be following the advice you get and applying to my own.

Yes Dave L, it is the original Other Dave. Thanks all for your input. So far I disconnected the flexible defrost lines from the fiberglass heater box and checked them for debris, as recommended by Bob P. Found none- I even hooked up a vacuum to both flex lines, vacuumed and blew air through both. Then I turned on the blower and found it sounds very anemic and produced barely any air flow out of the defrost hose ports.Yes, the outside flap is open, the inside flap is closed. I didn't go into the heater core housing, as I think the blower motor is the problem. My local Stude parts supplier is bring a replacement motor to our chapter meeting Wednesday, so by Friday or so I should have it installed and be able to post the results.

Well, Stude Dave 57, as myself and the other Dave (not to be confused with me, The Other Dave) have often discussed, being a Dave is a very special thing. Being a Bob is OK, but it's not the same as being a Dave.

Poor Dave. All he wanted was heat and he gets another kind. Ever hear someone yell Dave at the International and we all turned around? [)] Could be worse, could be Plaxico.

Heat ? [8D] No need of that down here in FT. Lauderdale with my 63 GT Hawk. Never use it. Never tried it. Maybe I will to see what happens.
