  • 59 Hawk Mag Wheels

I want to put mag wheels on my 59 Hawk. I want to go as wide as possible without rubbing on the fenders. (rear AND front wheels). I’m not interested in going wider toward the inside. Has anyone had experience doing this? What width wheels should I get? Also, I’m looking for a reasonable place to get them.

I've been running 15 x 7 wheels on my '62 GT Hawk (basically the same car as yours) for 30+ years and it is a big improvement over the original wheels. I run 215 75 15 tires on the 15 x 7's with no problems. My 1st set (Tru Spokes) had a 3 and 3/4" backspacing and I had no rubbing issues front or back. My current set (Crager Eliminator) has 4" back spacing and I had to add a 1/4" spacer to the fronts to get full turning without rubbing, no problems in the rear.

      Mags is not mags.

Today, the U-Pik yards are full of Fords and Mopars with factory aluminum wheels. With a bit of sweat equity, one can find inexpensive wheels in 16" and 17" sizes as well as the orphan 15"s on the Studes.

For the last several years I've had 17 x 7.5" 2015-2019 Ford Mustang wheels on my '62 GT. They have a 37.5mm offset (about 1.5") so I have 1" spacers under them. I have 235-55-17 tires on them (stock size for the Mustang). Before that I had 6.5 x 15" Ford Crown Victoria steel wheels with stock wheel covers and 215-70-15 tires. Both fit under the fenders very well. (I believe Rafe Holister has 8" wide wheels withe even larger tires than mine on the rear of his '56)

I have had 15x7's with 235/70r15 on my '63 GT for over 40 years. Slight rear fender lip massaging did the trick.
