  • Funny Story about a boy's first car!

I can't speak for anyone else, but were someone to ask for the secret to my success (I might be old and broke, but at least I lived long enough to be old), I would have to tell them that growing up poor was key.

I love it! So similar, even the year, to my own experience at that age, with this 1940 Mercury...but I sure didn't make that good a lick on it! Thanks for the post. Click image for larger version

Even then, it is hard to imagine a three year old Hawk selling for $50. His mother's memory is probably better.
In 1962, I was far from my first car, I was driving a 1957 President Classic. I went to an auction at a Ford dealership and purchased a 1954 Ford for $35. I sold it for $50.

.My story is the reverse story. At 16 I found in the local free ad paper an ad for a "1955" Hawk for $160. I went to see it and it was a Plimco Grey and Shasta White car with a 1956 Hawk front clip and funny side trim that said Speedster on the side. It had overdrive and was assembled in California. I called every few days and the guy probably thought there were a few people interested. At the house the car was located were also a few DKW cars which to me looked like a VW with gland problems. The car needed a battery. Finally dragged my dad to take a look and being the horse trader he was he haggled the car to $150 and a new battery. He said "save your money to fix it" However, that tune changed once he got behind the wheel while I followed in my mom's 67 Valiant. Going home, dad stepped on it and pulled far and fast away.
Cutting to the chase, after money spend and some of the problems with an enthusiastic teen age driver. dad decided I needed a new car. This was 1970 and the Studebaker was traded in on a brand new AMC Hornet with a Maroney of $2,307. Dad got $250.00 for the car and I got the payment of $74.85 for three years. I was working at Baskin Robbins then went in the USAF.

This is not the end of the story: the same car surfaces on Craigslist and Ebay 44 years later. It was bid to $8,500 and I wanted it but then that was the start of a journey of medical problems that pretty well stopped me in my tracks. However, as circumstances change, I am doing great now and my last acquisition is a 1957 Golden Hawk with TT and 3 speed overdrive. Suddenly, I am 16 again but with 53 years of knowledge to accompany me.

In 1979 I bought a 1970 Pontiac Lemans Sport for the princely sum of $75.00. I drove it for 3 years and put about 20,000 on it before I parked it. The upper A arm bushings went bad and the car would wander on the road.

Hard to believe I parked a 12 year old car, I ended up selling the engine to a coworker and hauled the carcas to a junkyard in 1988. I still have to title here.
