  • Studebaker myth.

At least I call it that, but I have heard that the front end on the avantis were actually designed as a built in front spoiler, is this true?[?]

A Few years agoI sat with Mr. Ebstean in his Florida apartment and had a long talk about the Avanti. Nothing even close to that came up.

In 1983 in South Bend, I had the occasion to chat with Robert Andrews, one of the original Avanti designers. I asked him his opinion of the then-new 20th Anniversary Avanti which was the first to have the integrated bumpers and front spoiler. He said to me "I f***** HATE it!" On that statment, not to mention, front spoilers didn't appear on muscle cars until the late 60's, I doubt it was even considered at all.

If anything the Avanti has a lift wing with that lower chin. The front
area does resemble a blunt downforce with side splitters but with such
a vertical nose I dont think it does much.

The Hawk, however, has that lower valance that runs the length of the
front end. I IS a wing of sorts, and with its design intended to draw
air up into the radiator, it acts as a downforce spoiler A buddy of
mine back in College claimed the front of the Hawk dropped at least an
        inch at freeway speeds.[:0]
