Tpica here. Bought a nice looking 62 GT Hawk automatic with a 289 2 barrel and single exhaust at auction listed in very good condition and an older restoration. Towed it home and surprise...speedo, temp and amp gauges as well as radio, lights and inst lights all inoperable and missing the trunk latch assembly. Runs, drives and has brakes but somebody put lipstick on a pig and got me. I just ordered the shop manual. Anybody have advice on where I should start troubleshooting?

Welcome Anthony to the SDC and to the SDC Forum!Glad to have you here, GT Hawks are Great Cars.
If you are not used to 1950's and '60's Cars, you may have a bit of a learning curve but the SDC, Turning Wheels Monthly SDC Publication, this Forum, the many Studebaker Vendors and the excellent Studebaker Parts Catalogs and Shop Manual are there to help.
With the Key "ON" do you have Turn Signals, Defrost Fan, Heater Fan etc.?
Stoplights and Dome Light are always "Hot", and are on one of the Two Fuses under the Dash.
It also could be a problem with Wires at the Ignition Switch or Ammeter.
Use your 12 Volt Test Light to probe Power Wires coming to Hd. Lt. Sw., Temp. Gauge, Ammeter.
If there IS Power, the Switches may be corroded, it sometimes helps to switch them to Hi, Lo and Off several times. OR could just be worn Out.
The Instruments only light on High (barely visible in Daylight), when the "INSTR" Lt. Sw. is UP and the Parking or Head Lights are on.
Speedometers are not Electric, so usually just a bad Cable or Pinion Drive Gear in the Transmission.
Disconnect the Cable at the Speedometer and spin the small Brass piece where it came off, I believe Clockwise from the back, while watching the Needle and Odometer to check it.

some great feedback here...I hear the turn indicator clicking, but no indicators on the dash, the climatizer fan works kinda noisily, gas gauge and oil pressure and wipers work. so does the horn....i will start chasing power. Thank you.

jbwhttail, this is a relapse then. I belonged to this club in the 80s and sadly had to sell my first 62 hawk (with factory AC I will add) in 2000 when I had a mortgage and a wife both late LOL. Anyway, my son turns 20 soon and its time to fall off the wagon. I wasn't expecting another fixer-upper, but aren't they all?

Welcome to the best forum on the net.
There is tons of assistance here, just be patient as most of us are OLD! And don't forget your GT is almost 60 years old as well.
I have a 1963 Gran Turismo Hawk which I have had for about 54 years and still enjoying it immensely.
The vendor list is huge so I suggest you check it out. It is truly amazing the amount of parts which are still available.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes...back in the 80s, no internet, but turning wheels was a great source for info, parts, etc. Back then my favorite sources for parts and knowledge were Newman and Altman, and Studebaker of California. I can already tell this forum is going to be awesome.

Before Ed Reynolds Sold Studebaker International to the Lime's in Hope, IN, many years ago, he had Moved the Long Beach Studebaker of Calif. into the Packard Farm in Greenfield, IN, combined them, re-named it, and enlarged the Farm Warehouses.
LONG before that he had combined his Expressly Avanti Store into Stude. of Calif.
Then a few More years later is when what used to be Newman and Altman/SASCO was then owned by Dennis and Denice Lambert who lost it to the City of South Bend and Ed was able to purchase the remains of the Original Studebaker Corp. Plant 8 Warehouse and Parts from the Hamilton Assembly Plant that was the New SASCO and combine that with S.I. and move the South Bend portion of the Stock to the Studebaker Truck and B-17 Engine Plant on Chippewa St.
That's probably enough to write a BOOK about if ALL the Details were known!At one time I was the Only Parts puller, and Order Taker on the 800 Line at Studebaker of Calif. before that job grew to 12 People at Greenfield!
