  • Who has ran sidepipes on their Stude

Getting a pre-1974 hobby car for me was important here is CA,since they smog anything newer, one of decisions to go with Stude, no cat converters, no inspections, no smog check.

anyone run chrome or otherwise side-pipes? they look mean on a Cobra or Vette, I think they will look mean on a Lark

Yeah there is a Guy I think here, who needs to get rid of the Ground Dragger Side Pipes on his Stude. and raise it to a Drive-able Height.

I've always liked side pipes, but they don't seem to be a Studebaker thing. The attached picture is hottest Lark I could find on the 'net... not sure you call those side pipes. I also found a Hawk with side pipes. An Avanti might look good with them, but found no pics.

My only non Stude collector car is a Factory Five Cobra , I have have only owned the car for a short time , But I can tell you they are Hot , Loud and look good , The loud and hot can be remedied. Installing the type I have on my car would require alot of pipe bending but it could be done , There have been a few used sets being sold on the Cobra forums and most of the time they are being sold because they are so loud and the owners are buying quieter versions . If you install a pair and they run under the doors Put heat shields on them as not to get a snake bite, Ed

i wear ear plugs since the 289 with cherry bombs are broken in and loud, ( they sound bitchin already)your factory five must be brutal ; windsor 351? the Stude chassis is roomier that any cobra

ridden motorcycles and leaned them into girls legs before, so i get the hot part of side pipes

there is stuff on ebay patriot comes to mind

that hawk looks tastefully done, not a budget build at all

You're right Rafe, I wouldn't call the fenderwell headers on the Lark side pipes. I have seen the small 1/2"-2" chrome "custom car" type side pipes on several Hawks, but I rarely see them functional on any car; they're usually just for looks. I don't have "side pipes" but, I do have side exhaust exits (dumps). With them open (just 3 ft of 2 1/4" pipe) , my overbored R1 (about 300ci) is surprisingly quiet. It's sound level is actually still legal, at least here, at under 85db at the pipe at 2500 rpm. I have four neighbors with cars or motorcycles MUCH MUCH louder.

One fellow in our club has Lake Pipes on his GT Hawk. Looks great. I considered them on the M5 under the running boards but went with a conventional dual exhaust. I still may change my mind.

are the wires real? Any better pics of them?

I have a VSE cobra with side pipes. A 427 aluminum small block chev. with an engine build with loads of high end racing parts. I have grown to hate the side pipes. It is about impossible to put them under the car though...no room. They remind me of the sixties.....make me smile....never thought much about putting them on any of my cars.

That's about the best picture I have of that one. If I see him on International Drive Your Studebaker Day (tm) I will get some side shots.
