  • 1963 R2 Package Super Hawk travels the road after thirty years

I’ve been working on this car for close to a year. Progress has been slow as I was caring for my 99 year old dad but a lot did get accomplished mechanically and cosmetically. I am very satisfied on how well it runs. The car has 38k miles and seems to run like that mileage is correct. I don’t think the heads have ever been off but a new front seal, valve seals, motor and trans mounts were replaced along with tons of other stuff. Anyway, the car sure feels tight. Hard acceleration from a roll on dry pavement lit up both rear tires; not bad for a power shift car. It makes me feel like I’m twenty years old again. I can’t wait to take it to the local cruise next Friday. If nothing else it will be the coolest “rat rod” there. I should have it at Indy for the national meet. Hopefully someone will pick this thing up and do the paint, chrome and weatherstrip. I’ve done my part.

Did it work? These were taken a few days ago for the insurance company. The alternator wasn’t tight and hadn’t even put the belt on the blower yet. That California tag on the rear isn’t original. I just hung it on there to make the car look better for the insurance guy.

They are OK Pics Nels, we can tell you are a Mechanical Genius, but NOT a Photographer!
            Good looking GT Super Hawk!

All She needs is for that Orange Red and White to go away.

It is always better when taking a Picture of a Car to let it FILL the picture by getting closer or Zooming, and then as our former TW Editor Art Unger (RIP) would always say: "don't let Trees, Poles, Houses, other Cars etc. GROW out of the Roof of your Car"!

Rich. Those pictures weren’t meant to be glamour shots. I’m trying to insure it for a good amount of money so the “ho hum”, distant pictures. That orange red paint you mention is absolutely terrible but the original color, super red, is visible in the door jams and firewall. Car is pretty straight and solid.

                Very nice "hot rod".

Nice Job Nels. The pictures brought back some great memories from about 50 years ago. And God bless your Father too!

Looks like a great car. Are you at all tempted to keep it?

Well done, nels! But you need that belt to make the badge count for something!
Not that a standard GT isn't special enough...

Oh the thought has crossed my mind. It would be nice to drive something that you don’t mhave to worry about where it’s parked etc. That’s probably why I’m enjoying it so much right now. I have too many others that need my attention and not enough time to get them all done.

Andy, that belt went on the day after those photos were taken and the car seems to perform up to the grill badge’s meaning and then some. A full package car just feels different than a standard Hawk. The handling is just impressive for it’s day.
