  • Gas tank source?

My mechanic recommends I get a new tank. I see that Stud-int doesn't offer them. Suggestions?

Brand new Hawk gas tanks have been available for a couple of years now. All of the major Studebaker parts vendors sell them. Including Studebaker International.

Stephen Allen in Florida, as well as Bo Markham in Florida, are the first two who come to mind, but there are several others. I believe having them repo'd was Stephen Allen's project. I looked at them at his booth at the last SDC-IM, up in Ohio, and they are identical to original.

They are about $450, which is very const effective, considering the price of R/R of an old one. However, I advise not to throw your old one away, as you may be able to sell it later.

You can pay to get it cleaned and sealed, at a radiator shop if they will do it, send it to your nearest Gas Tank Renu franchise, or buy a sealant kit from one of several vendors and do it yourself on the cheap, but still effective. I have three Studebakers running tanks that I sealed years ago, decades ago in fact.

But I agree with Joe. If you buy one of the new ones, don't throw the old one away.

My 56 P Hawk has the gas exiting the tank near the left at the bottom of the tank. Is this correct or has it been modified? Also, if I drive it till I hear the elect fuel pump and then fill it, it takes 13 gallons. Is this correct or should it take more? I wonder in the gas tube is not at the bottom of the tank?
Has anyone installed a larger capacity tank from something else?

Pick up the phone and call any of the major Studebaker parts vendors; Studebaker International, Studebaker Parts dot com, Studebakers West, Myer’s Studebaker, Stephen Allen’s, and yes, even Bo Markham.

Tell them you want a Hawk gas tank. Part number 1544597. The price will be $425 plus shipping, regardless of who you purchase it from.

You can also buy one on eBay.
