  • Studebaker head casting numbers.

We have never talked about this here before, have we? I did an inventory of heads on hand here this morning, on behalf of member Francis Prefontaine, who is looking for a set of 7.0:1 V8 heads. So I dug out all the heads I could find, wire-brushed them, and tried to read the casting numbers. So, in no particular order, this is what I found: 536686, 2 sets, both on running engines, one of those is in a pretty much unmolested '62 Champ truck. Found an old Forum post that indicates that these are 7.0:1 compression "special export heads". 537555, 5 sets, 1 on an engine. These are the garden variety V8 head of their era. 1557570, 6 sets, 3 on engines. These are the garden variety V8 heads of their era. 1555284, 1 set, loose. These aren't on the charts, AFAIK. 535976, one pair, loose, on the chart as a 7.5:1 head, I think. 535676: left side head on a loose '61 Hawk engine I have stored. It's mate has no casting number I can see. The engine will run.

I welcome any comments or questions. If somebody thinks I copied down a number wrong, let me know, and I will double check. I was striving for accuracy, but reading upside-down numbers while bent over isn't always easy.

Here is a comprehensive list of head casting numbers, part numbers, years, compression ratio, etc on Bob Johnstone's great site:

IIRC, within the last couple of years, there have been a series of articles in Turning Wheels regarding the various head part/casting numbers, written by Andrew Beckman.

Just curious as to the build which benefits from 7.0:1 compression ratio?

Heads alone don't get there; it requires the full dish pistons and unmachined block deck and head deck and a thick head gasket

AFAIK, that would require the 1557580 truck/R2 heads. As has been mentioned, the truck and R2 heads may have the same casting number, but are machined differently and require appropriate spark plugs. The R2 use J-series 3/8" reach spark plugs. The truck heads need H-series plugs, 1/2" reach.
