Yesterday, I closed the door on my 2005 Brand V, and heard a loud clunk! I opened the door, saw nothing obvious, and went about my business. Upon returning and closing the door, the clunk reappeared, clearly inside the door. I stopped by the bank drive-through on the way home, and the window only went down 1/2 way. Hmm, the regulator broke, it has to be. But as soon as I turned on the radio, I realized there was no sound from the door speaker. Aha? What could have a happened? I had a suspicion of something I had never seen.
So today, I took off the door panel, all looked good, except for that non-op speaker., so out comes the drill to remove the rivets that hold it in, and sure enough, the magnet fell off of the speaker! I've never seen this before! I attempted to epoxy it back on as the pins that locate it were still in place, and it worked. So I riveted it back in place, put it all together and thought I was done.
As my 3rd grade teacher told me many times, "that's what you get for thinking!" So off comes the panel again ( not easy on this car) so I can get the part number and size. So let's reinstall the door card again, until I can find a new speaker.
as I install the switch that opens the gas flap and trunk, the switch disintegrates! OK, I guess I find a new one of those too, I can always use the remote to pen the trunk and use the pull tag for the gas flap. But NOOOOoooo!!! The remote does not work! Wow, look at the clouds, I better roll up the windows and close the sunroof. Nope, nope, nope. Nothing. Key in the ignition, and I am greeted by the clattering of the starter solenoid. WTF? Sure enough, I have only 8 volts, and I had just stared the car an hour earlier. The battery is 7 years old, so it was past warranty... by a month.
The car is in our narrow drive the wrong way for any of our cars to get to it, or the neighbors cars unless we had exceptionally long jumpers. (Small urban lot, 1 car wide drive, and that's the entire distance between the houses).
Now for the Studebaker content: I take the Champ's battery, rig it in the Jetta to get it started and moved. Given the other issues, it will sit and I will drive the Champ for a while until parts come, I get a battery, and all that junk.
I was going to wait another year and a half and buy a new car for my 65th birthday, but I am thinking I may have to buy an early present to myself. I'm still working sometimes driving on rough roads and need a disposable car, like this Jetta.
But as always, the Studebaker starts and runs!
