Welcome to the forum! If you have not joined the Studebaker Drivers Club you should. It is a great resource for parts and information. While you are at it, join one of the local chapters near you. They can help save lots of time in help for your car.

It can. Are you asking because you have a 1956 3 speed transmission with overdrive and would like to use what you have? If that is the case, trade for someone that needs a 56 for a 1958 to 1964 overdrive transmission.

The 1956 transmission used a 2 piece driveshaft with a carrier support in the drive line. In 1958, there were changes in the placement of the rear axle on the spring perches and floor pan and the transmissions from that point on have an extended one piece tail shaft on the transmission.

I have never attempted to do that but at the very least you would need to engineer a longer driveshaft to fit the shorter body of the 1956 transmission. Unless you know a firm that could do you may have driveline balance problems and vibration happen.

In 1956, there were two mounting shafts for the clutch pedal. There were two transmissions used for V8's: T-86 and T-85. You probably have a T-86. I am sure there are plenty of the later model T-86 (1958-1964) around.

    Hope this helps
