  • Radio removal and repair ‘50 champion

    Hello all,
I noticed radio removal isn’t addressed in the shop manual- anybody have any info/tips? Or is it pretty straightforward? Also, my radio turns on but only hums, there is no signal reception. Can anyone recommend a person/shop to recondition this type of radio?
    Thx,
    Jim

The radio mounts at three points. there are two vertical special bolts that go through the chrome bezel into the bottom of the dash. These bolts have shoulders on them that equalize the pressure on the top and the bottom of the bezel.

There is a J-bolt with a wing nut on the back bottom of the radio that goes at an angle to a hole in the top of the firewall. This J-bolt is very important as without it, the radio wants to tilt rearward and will deform the chrome bezel.

You also have to disconnect the power lead and the antenna lead.

Bud on this forum is the best choice to recondition the radio. He lives in Arizona and you can ship the radio to him.

      Thx Roy,
I’ve attached a picture of the radio, I can get the “S” number on Friday.

It's an early S-4927. Seven buttons identifies it as such. That is one of the correct radios for 1950.

It looks very nice cosmetically, too.
