Bob Bourke told me that feature was added because Studebaker was concerned about drumming in the large door panel. He said something like, if Duesenberg can do it, I can do it. Of course it was eliminated by 1957. Bob figured that either it wasn't really needed or that they solved the potential problem with the inner door spray-on sound deadening.

In reply to the OP's post about what it's called - a cove. C shaped - cove.

Bob Bourke did NOT call it a cove. My memory is weak on it, but I believe that he referred to it as a swoop.

EDIT: I believe that to be a cove, it would have to have had a return at the bottom.

Ya know... a nice pin stripe might accentuate/enhance that graceful body line. That has always been among the things I admire so much about that body style.

And my wife just shakes her head....... If she brings a Nike product with a 'swoosh' on it home, I take a sharpie marker and blot it out.

I am not paid to advertise for them or their product.

Sounds like when I order a new car. I always specify no dealer ID on the car (unless they want to pay me to advertise). This goes back to the days when they used to put holes in your car to attach a chrome nameplate. I did agree to have a license plate frame with the dealer's info. on my PT Cruiser for the first few months.
