  • Video - The (Studebaker) STP Turbine Car at Indy 1967

Nicely done video on the 1967 STP Turbine Car.

Has several Studebaker-specific items/references. See if you can find/spot them.

Thanks for posting that! My favorite part was where the reporters asked Andy if Parnelli coud have gone faster. Andy said no. Then they asked Parnelli (who had not heard Andy's comment). Parnelli said "oh probably 180", then laughed.

I forgot about him spinning in the middle of the race. ...amazing he could do that and continue on.

Thanks Paul for posting that! That one is a Winner, very detailed.

I never knew THAT much never done before Technology and Engineering went into that STP #40!

Studebaker References? What was Byers Burlingame doing in there? .

The specific Studebaker items/references -- Ron Dame noted one of them, the Avanti parked just behind the turbine car at the very end of the video. The other was Byers Burlingame, as you noted - the video says he was the "management representative" for the turbine car project. How much was the turbine car a Studebaker corporate project instead of just a Granatelli brothers project I'm not sure.

Thanks for posting Paul. A very entertaining 17 1/2 minutes. Andy was a genius ahead of his time and I particularly liked the official's comment on the ingenuity and execution of his car.

I remember my two brothers, me and dad, listening to that race on the radio in the garage. We were working on dad's Studebaker Golden Hawk at the time. It was great fun and dad wore a big grin on his face the whole race until the STP car broke. Dad could not believe it was running so well until just 7 miles from the end of the race. After that we just sat in the garage and talked about what happened, and how the turbine care would be back next year and win the race. Such great memories. I think this was the first time I have ever seen film of that race. What a trip.

Dad and I were at pole day sitting in the grandstand of the third turn. You could tell Mario was going faster as he braked heavily into the turn with the front end scrabbling back and fourth before he got back on the gas.

Parnelli went by in silent Sam without any twitching and no noise. He was not driving it hard.
