  • weird vent(?) under hood of Avanti II

I don't think this is factory! But what does it do, funnel air from the wheel well to the underhood area? Why?

It adds 100 horsepower by ducting fresh cold air to the engine! The internet says so!!

This is one I am considering. It runs, drives, stops, supposedly has good job troughs and frame and is dirt cheap. Cosmetics? Well, that's another thing.... But it's not awful.

I've owned 4 Avanti IIs and starting around 75 or 76 they added a cold air intake. The fresh air intake hose connected to a cutout in the fender well as you see it. From there another hose in the wheelwell is routed and mounted in the lower section of the front grille to catch the cold air. On an original factory setup with a GM air cleaner, the engine side of the intake hose would connect to the air cleaner snorkel. This Avanti has an aftermarker open air cleaner and if you look closely at the end of the hose, you will see an inline fuel filter. This cold air intake is being used to cool the fuel possibly to correct a vapor lock issue but I doubt it does anything. Its an embarassing modification.

It appears to be a quality job, but I wonder if somehow the lint trap was lost. Maybe designed by a first year engineering student. If this didn't work, his next step would have been cutting and fitting a grill in the front nose section. Similar to the brilliant carpet between the fuel filter and valve cover engineering on my 1970 Avanti II. Click image for larger version

That tweed looks like the ‘60’s; mebbe a period attempt at retro?

                  Robert,
It is an anomaly indeed as my 1970 Avanti II omitted this rare option.
