  • Podcast now "up" RE: June 5, 2021 radio show

June 16, 2021: See Update below this preview information for a direct link to the podcast.

The following announcement from our local Hendricks County Indiana weekly newspaper, The Republican. (Before anyone gets too excited about politics, know that The Republican has been published continuously since 1847! So it predates today's Republican political party, which did not exist until about a decade after the newspaper's inception.)

    Update June 16, 2021:

If you're interested, here's a direct link to the 59-minute "Car Collecting in Indiana" podcast of the June 5, 2021, Hoosier History Live radio show on which I was the guest of host Nelson Price. The topic is easily understood from the title. It was a lot of fun.

The introduction says the podcast was underwritten by The Studebaker National Museum, but it didn't cost the museum anything, so donors to that worthy enterprise need not fear their donations being frittered away. Rather, I paid for the podcast's underwriting on behalf of the museum, as a donation to the museum. (The invoice never went to The Studebaker National Museum; it was paid here.)

I was discouraged from promoting our 2021 Studebaker Drivers Club International Meet in September 2021 because that would date the show. If we talked about that event, which I wanted to, this podcast, which is archived forever, would be obsolete after the meet. The show's producer and host didn't want that, so the 2021 SDC International Meet wasn't mentioned. Know that not mentioning it wasn't my idea, although I do understand and endorse the reasoning.

However, it looks like The Studebaker National Museum and The [Northern Indiana] History Museum's Concours de Elegance at Copshaholm will be held every summer, probably in July, so I was able to [ahem, immodestly...] promote that event as "Now, the premier collector car event in Indiana..." but did not mention the specific July 10, 2021 date of this year's production.

Trivia: The second caller identified himself as "Ron; Bob's old buddy from The Purdue Reamer Club." That turned out to be one Ron Witt, whom I had not spoken to for about 40 years! No particular reason; we just hadn't stayed in touch. The trivia is that Ron and his [then] girlfriend Janet were the couple who introduced Cari and I on a blind date in December 1968: Janet and Cari were roommates at I.U; Ron and I were friends from pledging The Purdue Reamer Club together. After the show, I got Ron's information from the show's producer and called him, and we spent the better part of an hour getting caught up. Small world!

This is audio only; thankfully, there is no video :

That's right, Bob. UIndy is "short" for University of Indianapolis. Their School of Broadcasting "runs" WICR radio; "The Diamond." They normally have jazz and other music, but Hoosier History Live is one of their specialty shows.

The call letters WICR come from the school's original name, Indiana Central College, before they changed the name to University of Indianapolis several years ago. (i.e., WICR = W Indiana Central Radio.)

The show sounds like a lot of fun. On February 1, 2020, just before the pandemic hit, I was "in studio" with host Nelson Price and we had Andy Beckman on the phone from The Studebaker National Museum in South Bend. The show's topic was, of course, Studebakers. Here is a link to that podcast (audio only, remember), if anyone cares to listen to it:

Yes, Andy; the host, Nelson Price, will open the lines for callers to ask questions or offer additional information about halfway through the show. BP

My favorite BP quote of the interview:
"When you are around something long enough, you either develop a passion or hatred of it. Fortunately, I developed a passion."

                    Fortunate for all of us.

                      Bob,
Well done! I caught the last half (damn computers) and your program was well presented.
Keep Studebakering! Nelson mentioned your 9 car garage. Besides the Astra White units and Buick, what else do you own?
                      Cheers,
                      Bill

'Glad you enjoyed it, Bill and Andy; thanks.

Nelson is certainly infatuated with the thought of a nine-car garage, but I wish he would have mentioned it less so we could talk about other things! Oh, well; he's a nice guy and an interesting Hoosier Historian, and I enjoy his company.

The "nine-car garage" is filled with my 2002 Dakota Quad-Cab pickup, bought new and now with only 51,000 miles on it, all four 1964 Studebaker Daytona models in Astra White, Medium Bright Yellow 1973 Mustang convertible, Go-Mango ("Hemi Orange" in Dodge parlance) 1971 Plymouth Barracuda convertible, Sandalwood (soft yellow) 1972 Buick LeSabre Custom convertible, and Persian Aqua / Dover White 1956 Packard Clipper Super 2-door hardtop.

All are running and driving cars ready to go, but nothing you'd call fully restored. The Mustang is easily the best of the bunch, being an original-paint, original-tires car with fewer than 18,000 actual miles on it. Here is where The Studebaker National Museum featured it in their Disco Decade Drives special display last winter:

Your pickup is a little like my 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser LE. I took delivery of it 6/13/2000. It now has 53K miles. It is also garage kept. I drove it to a church event yesterday. I try to use it about once per week.

Thanks for the dissertation, Bob. What a lovely collection. Re your Mustang, although purists prefer earlier years, I have always liked that late body style, especially in Mach trim and fastback. It's probably due to the original "Gone in 60 Seconds" movie. Early in the 70's I used to get to drive a friend's 1972 Canadian Sprint "A" Decor Sport roof.
                            Anyway, ENJOY!
