  • Jeff Rice reincarnated Smokey Yunick

I have been following with great interest, the Studebaker Power Team's progress regarding the former Hot Rod Magazine Engine Master's Challenge, now of course named: "Master Of Motors". I practically laughed my a** off when I got to the article in May 2021 Turning Wheels detailing what the crew were up to building this year's competitor. The part about the headers was priceless.
    Cheers,
    Bill

Actually got a couple of requests for those headers.
Had to raise the price way past CASO levels <lol>.

    As a side note...
Smokey was one of my racing mentors (as was Chad Knaus, Gary Nelson, and Robin Pemberton)
I met him once (well, we passed each other...I said 'Hi" and he looked at me. Close enough).
Met his daughter once, after Smokey passed away.
Quite a few of his machine pieces are over at Don Garlits museum (antique side).
His autobiography box set of books is priceless.

And a teaser update (not 'official', but 98% sure)...

The Master of Motors competition has been postponed from October 2021 to March of 2022. (sigh).
Re-arranging the TW articles to spread out the past a little bit...
The "Studebaker Power Team" will be competing with a new Studebaker V8 engine.
(ie: reading that rule book with a magnifying glass)
The engine short block is done. The top end is almost ready. Dyno testing to commence as soon as possible.
We plan on displaying the engine (hopefully on the run stand) at the SDC Int'l meet at Indy in September.
My idea (as told to "Digger Dave") was to display it in the host hotel lobby and p
ut a donation can on the engine.
Tell everyone every time we hit $500 we'll fire it up.
"Digger Dave" just laughed at me. He really did!

          Jeff,
Several years ago, I was blessed to attend a small seminar put on by ARP and hosted by Smokey. He was most entertaining and obviously extremely knowledgeable.
