  • SMS auto interior fabric samples

Has anyone received samples from sms auto fabric? Particularly green vinyl from a 64 hawk. I recently emailed them and requested samples.. curious how others might have been helped though them. I bought door panels from Justin laird up in California( he has been very helpful) I’m just trying to find the closest match as possible for my interior. Also if anyone knows how many door panel clips hold the panels on? ( studebaker parts.com sells them in packs of ten.
    Thanks - hunter

Before having the seats in my 1947 Champion sedan reupholstered about 3 years ago, I requested and received samples from SMS. The person I spoke with on the telephone said, "I have exactly what you are looking for." They certainly did. The sample looked exactly the same as original. I am 100 per cent satisfied with the material I received, and with how it looks installed in the car. The people at SMS were very nice to deal with.

I ordered Blue vinyl and cloth samples for the inserts for my 1963 GT Hawk from SMS and they arrived quickly and were a perfect match. Recently I ordered a Claret Red vinyl and it was a perfect match as well, although I ended up not needing the Claret Red. With COVID they are very slow, it took around six (6) weeks to arrive, but it seems like everyone is through these times. Good Luck!

I used sms for my 1956 golden hawk upholstery. They had the correct vinyl, the correct cloth, and even the silver welt. Another SDC vendor told that the cloth was no longer available and said they could do it all in vinyl. I wasn’t happy with that answer so I went with sms. Very responsive - a good vendor.

I used them for the Kart Hauler. I had them dye vinyl to the Chippewa Green and cream paint that I used...

Hunter, thanks for the kind words. If you look on the back of your door panels, they should have 7 slots for clips for each door of your GT Hawk. 14 in total. In addition, there are 3 or 4 screws at the bottom of each door. Be careful making the punch hole, so as not to unravel the carpet with the new hole.

Like others have reported, SMS is great. I would use them for what you need, and have your upholstery guy make them up.

I live not far from SMS. They are in Canby and Live about 20 miles away in Dundee. I have spoken to folks who work at SMS when I attend the Canby Cruise-in each August. They seem very knowledgeable and are enthusiastic about the company. I have ordered vinyl samples for my Champ truck and they arrived in about a week. I ended up not buying anything but may go to their business to get more information. They have a huge array of products and seem like helpful folks. I would not hesitate to recommend them. The only complaint I hear about them fairly often is that they are slow. But then, they're in Canby Oregon. It's that small town ethos.

Ditto my experience regarding correct upholstery for my '57 Clipper Wagon. A small screwup on my carpet but that sometimes happens.

I regularly preach the gospel of SMS. I don't claim that it should be a one stop shopping site, but any search that does not include SMS as part of the process is too limited. If you find a specialty provider, who is well vetted and that deals in what you need, by all means take advantage of it. If, however, you are trying to match a particular interior where options are limited, you need to include them in your search. When you've beaten your head against a wall trying to find what you need but can't find it, SMS continues to come through.

I'm pleased that "Classic Car" magazine chose to do an article on the company. I think it does a pretty good job of highlighting the reason SMS is different, and why people from all over the world use it's services. I'm just a hobbyist just like you, with no ties to SMS just a satisfied customer trying to help.

Shown is a photo of my original door panel for a 1957 International A-100 pickup, with a sample sheet that SMS sent me for comparison. The piece at the left is a perfect match for the light colored vinyl, and the piece at the right is a perfect match for the seat upholstery (it is an unusual fabric weave/pattern, I am amazed that they have it).

I didn't receive a matching sample for the dark colored vinyl ( though I could have re-requested another sample to be sent), but I viewed an image of a 1959 Ford Galaxie door panel on their website that appeared to match (fingers crossed that it matches) and went with that. They just so happened to have made these particular designed door panels for an other customer, so they already have the patterns to make it.

I visited them in person several years ago while on a vacation in OR. It is a big warehouse and a small office area. I had taken a picture of the blue cloth in my 64 Cruiser, knowing it had been changed at some point in its life. They took one look t the picture and said oh it’s 64 Chevy. They walked to a small 8 foot tall drawer in a row at least 30 feet long, opened the drawer and pulled out a small sample of exactly what I needed. I waited the 15 minutes while they went to cut the material for me. When they brought it to me they said it was the end of the roll so gave me about two extra feet off the end of the roll. I was impressed, still am.

great small company that is doing things right.

A few years ago I requested headliner sample for my '56 Power Hawk and what they sent was an exact match. My headliner is intact except all of the seams have separated from the bows. I ordered a new headliner, (to be installed by the next owner), and yup, it was an exact match! Good people..
