There is a 1938 8A 4 door sedan that is for sale here in town. It has been sitting for years, but the interior is usable with no tears. It is green. I don't think it has overdrive. I am thinking of getting it in a few months. It would be my first pre war car. I have taken a ride in a 38 but never driven one.
How hard would it be to get an overdrive adapted? As far as I know, the 38 transmission was a one year only side by side.

I am guessing poetic license here. In 1935 before the Commander name took a two year hiatus, it was the 250 cid straight eight for the powerplant. When the name came back, it was with the "new Six" which was really the old Dictator six.
Studebaker did the same thing in 1959 with the "new" 170 cid six. Well yes, the previous year had a 185 cid six, so the 170 could be adverstised as new in comparasion with the previous years Champion
All speculation on my part.

But the '38 is a floor shift and the '39 is a column shift.Roger Hill
