  • mouse nest

I started my daily driver today (non Studebaker) and there was a miss in one cylinder my early diagnosis was most probably a spark plug as it came on very quickly. The engine light also came on and I was not looking forward to taking it in for service for $ 300 - $400 just for a look at it. I removed the plastic cover over the engine and there was a freshly built mouse nest over top of an injector. I vacuumed the nest up and with compressed air blew out the remainder of the debris and noticed that one of the injector wires was chewed off thus rendering the injector unserviceable, this was a lucky find and a cheap fix. This just goes to show that mice don't just prey on our older cars. This nest was built over night as it was clean and dry.

Mice and other animals love new car wiring as it has plant-based insulation now. Apparently it is not always covered by warranty or insurance if it is eaten.

I have had several interiors ruined by animals and mice even using Bounce, Moth Balls and Irish Spring.

I haven't had this problem. But then, I have 12 cats.

If you have a problem with vermin destroying your interior or engine bay during storage, set out some mayonaise jar top sized containers of pure (not 50/50) antifreeze, they cannot resist the sweetness. Id rather dispose of mummified remains in the Spring, than half my seat stuffing!...

My 2015 Dodge Charger is currently inoperable due to rodent damage to the main wiring harness, AGAIN! The instrument panel lights up like a Christmas tree with all of the warning and caution lights.
I have researched many chemicals and electronic gizmos that state that they will keep rodents away, but there are always some reviewers that claim the items did not work for them.

I like this suggestion but I suspect that you will need to find the old style Ethylene Glycol stuff and not the more common (now) Propylene Glycol version.

Anybody else have success with dryer sheets? Perhaps less toxic around pets too as anti freeze is.

One of these days if I get my varmint problem back, I suspect I'll try the rotating beer can covered in peanut butter over a 5 gallon bucket about 1/2 full of water. I gave up on the newer versions of poison as they don't desiccate (mummify) the remains like the older high concentrations did. I found a mouse about twice normal size a couple years back that was just swollen with blood but found others like it that just rotted when they died. Had to shoot the little guy with my pellet rifle to put it out of his misery. Messy!! but I'd moved him outside first.

Yes the 5 gallon bucket with a spinning can and some peanut butter works. I put RV antifreeze in mine so it's not ice in the winter. Also need to give them an easy ramp up to get to the spinning can of death.

The only times I have problems with my Charger is when it is parked outside. Despite a bumper crop of acorns and other seeds being readily available in my surrounding yard for them to eat, chipmunks or other rodents like getting out of the elements and go under the hood of my car and nibble on the wiring as it is convenient.

When parked in my garage I have no issues, I have a 5-gallon bucket 3/4 filled with water and a sprinkling of sunflower seeds floating on top, with a ramp leading from the floor to the top of the bucket. I have found as many as six mice that have drowned at one time in the bucket after only two weeks. Dump outside and repeat.

I met a guy that leaves his hood open while in storage as the mice don't like the open concept.

For the past couple of years we have used FRESH CAB Botanical rodent repellent. It has worked in the past, it is used in farm implements primarily. you can check it out at earthkind.com It is packets you place inside or around your vehicle (4 to a package). I put one each in trunk cab and under the hood then one under the car and change monthly. It does have a pine scent to it.

I forgot to add that it has a warning statement about the possibility of staining on fabric, we just place it on a plastic dish/cup of some kind.
