    Well last November I put my Avanti to sleep for the winter. Due to unforeseen medical issues the car has remained covered up garaged and sleeping. Before putting her to bed fresh gas and some stabilizer were added to the mix. Battery Tender hooked up......and away I went. My fears of returning to a hard to start car were fortunately foundered.......as eight months have passed and just today I attempted to wake her from the long slumber. Well after maybe six attempts to crank-n-start, she finally fired right up!! I am indeed impressed......eight months with no activity and with little effort she sprang to life..................Ahh yes ;-)

      I parked my Avanti last November in my remote garage which is attached to a rental unit. I had intended to start it in April but due to the Virus is did not happen. The end of last month I went over and started it. Prior to parking the Avanti; I did nothing; no battery charger no stabilizer. The gas tank was topped off with 93 octane with Ethanol and the battery disconnected. After 5 or 6 revolutions to bring fuel to the carburetor the engine fired. Strange car it was a R2 in storage for 10 years (owner died) ; a former owner had the supercharger removed and a factory AC installed They also installed R1 heads and a non R2 AFB carburetor. Never checked the distributor or looked into the engine with a camera to see which pistons are in it. Planed to but haven't gotten around to it.
      The other day I went to start my other Avanti which is at home. Take it out about once a week Only a one car garage; family car stays outside along with my Bronco. I am trying 91 non ethanol. (about 1/2 93 and half 91 non Ethanol mixture in the tank) After sitting for a week; unlike previously it started up after 2or3 revs. Usually takes around 5 or 6 revs. I only ran the car about 7 miles; not long enough to see if the engine would ping. It was hot and the AC needs a new hose and recharge.

            The Pistons are all the same for R1 and R2 so they should be Flat Tops and fine, all it takes is one Spark Plug out and a small, bright flashlight or maybe a Pencil to tell if someone rebuilt it with Shallow or Deep Dished Pistons.

            Changing Pistons is not necessary as long as Premium Fuel is used with stock 1557571 R1 and '63/'64 Standard Lark/Hawk Heads.

            The Vacuum Advance on the Dist. is the main difference there.

                Rich not to start a war here but...........In my experience a R-1 engines do not run well on today's 93 octane fuel....especially during the summer driving season.

                  You need to drive your car more Up and down the Jersey shore , It was a very mild winter ! Then you won't be surprised when it starts , And I agree about the 93 octane But its not to bad with Sunoco 93 ultra , Ed

                    That is why I am fortunate to still obtain TEL.........till the storm troopers swoop down on me;-) Thinking of putting her up near the Inlet Cafe in the Highlands............one of most beautiful places in the Garden State!

                      I disagree, Island Beach State park is the best , This picture was taken July 4th overlooking Johnny Allens cove at IBSP and notice no artificial light !                         Beautiful shot and so glad you are feeling better. Battery Tender and Stabil are the secret to our classic cars. I agree with Sunoco 93 Ultra. Costco 91 is also a Top Tier fuel that I highly recommend. Use it in my GH and also my '70 Mustang Cobra Jet Conv. Stay safe and post some pic's of the Avanti when you get a chance between cruising. BTW, my wife is from Clifton, NJ (sure miss Rutz Hutt) and parents moved to Freehold, NJ.

                          Here in Phoenix all we can get is 91 w/ethenol. I keep a supply of 100LL from airport. One gallon in a full tank puts it over the edge.

                            But Ed this is a state park.............I am speaking of a place to live!.......the "cliffs" in the Atlantic Highlands are so much like San Francisco..........only thing is snow in the winter......no way one can park on those driveway inclines;-(
