G461827 is too high a serial number to be a 1946 Studebaker Champion. (My 1947 Champion is G288050, built May 1947.) The Champion numbers for South Bend production started at G101 in 1939 and continued consecutively into the 1950s with small breaks at the start of each model year.
Champions built is Vernon, California and Hamilton, Ontario also started with G, but had different serial number ranges.
On your body number, 8G indicates a 1949 Champion. W5 indicates a 4-door sedan with Regal Deluxe trim. 20037 indicates this is the 20,037th 8G-W body which was welded together --- it is no indicator of where it stands in the series of completed cars built, as bodies were not necessarily used in numerical order when building complete cars.
On Studebaker serial numbers, what appears to be a capital letter I is actually the number 1.Last edited by Greenstude; 07-09-2020, 04:57 PM.Bill Jarvis
