  • whats the difference in the "R" engines

Maybe I'm just a little slow or uninformed but I was wondering what the difference is between the R1, R2, R3, and the regular engines is. Are they just built for higher performance or is it something else. Just curious.

They are all high performance engines, just different degrees & rareity. The R-1 was the base Avanti engine that featured a more radical cam, 4 bbl carb, dual point distributor, heavy duty aluminum cam gear, dual exhaust, & a 10.25:1 compression ratio. The R-2 was basically the same except for a 9:1 compression ratio & a supercharger. the R-3 had a more radical cam, a higher output supercharger, cubic inches was increased to 304.5, carburator was enclosed in a pressure box & the engine was hand built in Santa Monica, California by Paxton Products & had to develop at least 335hp on the dyno before it was released. There was also an R-4 that was like the R-3, but it was naturally aspirated with dual 4 bbl carburators, also hand built by Paxton.

thanks for the information. Did they all use the same block or was there a different block for the R3?

My understanding the R3 and R4 blocks were essentially the same blocks but hand selected castings for thickness, strength and lack of core shift. They were specially machined and the heads were also special castings.

        Just overboring a stock 289 doesn't make an R3 or R4.

I know you didn't ask about it, but there was one experimental R5. It was essentially the same as the R4, but had dual superchargers along with the dual 4 barrels.

thats interesting with the R5, do you know anymore about it, like what it was in or how well it worked?

So, if I put a supercharger on my low compression 289 and add an extra distributor, should I call it an R2D2?

The R-5 was experimental whereas the other R series engines were available to the public. The R-5 also had an aircraft fuel injection setup made by Bendix installed. The Avanti it was in did a 2 way average of around 196 mph if memory is correct. It was built by Paxton, Andy Granatelli oversaw the construction.
