  • Classic Car Lentinello Column

Got my Hemmings Classic Car May 2020 mag (#188) and read Richard Lentinello's column, Independent Thinking. There is a part that discusses Studebaker that is terrible! Here is my response:

Richard - I read your Independent Thinking column in the May Classic Car and am disappointed in the Studebaker paragraph. Several inaccuracies and omissions:

    1. The 62 -63 models you noted as Larks were Hawks 62 - 64.
    2. Larks were 59 - 66. Daytona was the popular model. Challenger came in 65 when chevy engines were used. (65 - 66).
    3. Engines were 170 - 245 Studebaker and 194 - 230 GM 6's. V8's were 232 - 305 Studebaker (many supercharged 289's) and 283 GM.
    4. You failed to note Studebaker styling. 47 post war (starlight coupe). 53 Loewy coupe. 50's Hawks. Most egregious is not mentioning the Avanti (170+ mph, supercharged, fiberglass hot rod designed from scratch in 50 days by 4 guys in a house in Palm Springs).
You could also have mentioned that design giants like Exner, Loewy, Stevens, DeLoreon all had stints with Studebaker. One last impressive fact - Studebaker built 68,000 engines used on B-17's during WWII.
I think you need a redo.
