In addition to my '52 race car, I also had another '52 Starlight that I acquired in early '73. It had broken glass and a bad axle (3.54 IIRC for an automatic) among other problems. I had already registered the race car for the AHRA Winternationals, but broke something on it the week before the race. Because I'd already fixed the glass on the other '52, I threw in a 4.56 rear and won my class (not the same class as the race '52) with an otherwise bone stock 232. A few months later as I was playing around with a late '50's Caddy dual quad manifold with 2 Rochester 2GC carbs on adapters, the '73 SDC International meet in Colorado was coming up with too little time to revert to the OEM 2 barrel Stromberg. I quickly stuck a 3.07 axle in for the trip from Phoenix. One of the activities there, was an economy run, so I signed up for it to make sure I could get a full tank of gas at the end, since the OPEC shortage was raging. Well, I won the economy run for V8's with a 25.13 MPG over the other 15 cars entered. My point is that gear ratios make a far bigger difference in performance, whether it's acceleration or fuel economy, than any other factor.

I took the timing cover off and resealed it , put new valve and valley cover gaskets , adjusted the valves and changed the oil a couple times and the smoking and leaking are basically gone . It is running smooth and starts great . I haven't done the math but I think I am getting around 18-19 miles to the gallon , that is better than my 09 Chevy 4.8L pickup .

Studebaker V8s, are removed and replaced, way more often, than is actually necessary! They are extremely durable, and often, require very little? To return them to a proper operating condition.Originally posted by 259Champ View PostI took the timing cover off and resealed it , put new valve and valley cover gaskets , adjusted the valves and changed the oil a couple times and the smoking and leaking are basically gone .
