  • Built in the ‘Bend: A Studebaker Centenary

Apparently, on this day 100 years ago Studebaker built its first car in South Bend:

That's correct. All Studebaker motorized vehicles had been produced in Detroit prior today 100 years ago.

This is a good reminder for those that think that Studebaker cars were always built in South Bend (besides assembly in Vernon, Hamilton, etc.).

EDIT: Don and I inputted at the same exact minute.

For the record, most Studebaker open BODIES (roadsters and tourings) were made in South Bend and shipped by rail to Detroit where they were placed on chassis. This was the case throughout the teens. Note the lettering on buildings 53/58 in this photo. This is the south front of the building later used by Studebaker for salvage then purchased by Newman/Altman for their Standard Surplus facility. It was razed in the early 2000 and is now the site of the county jail.

Thanks for the photo Richard. I remember seeing the ruminants of a painted sign on the east side of the building advertising wagons and harness but never knew that this structure was once the body building. Do you know what year this photo was taken.? Is that building 84 in the background- if so that would mean the photo would be after 1923/24.

The photograph was taken from the southwest looking northeast. Sample Street runs left to right through the photograph.

It appears this Studebaker employee's Research pin back was from the early Detroit Plant.
