  • History of my Hawk

Okay Folks, I hope someone can help me. I know my Hawk was delivered to Phoenix, AZ in May of 1960. In November 1974 Don Stone of Colorado Springs listed it in the TW Hawk roster with the vin No. 60V60351 with interior of red vinyl and black cloth and black carpet. The same as now. In May 1972 it participated in the Pike's Peak Econo Run probably by Don Stone. On the back windshield are 2 decals, one is SDC membership, the other is "US Public Health Service - 1798". Maybe someone knows Don Stone and knows who he bought it from and/or who he sold it to. I found out that he moved from Phoenix so he may have been the original owner. Terry Richardson bought it from a car lot in Florence, AL in May 2002 and sold it in 2016 to Bryan Dyer who I bought it from. All help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanx, Yogi

In the 2008 SDC Roster, the only Don Stone listed lives in Texas and owned a '53 Champion coupe and a '63 Hawk.

Your Hawk would have been sold by Ray Tanner Motors in Phoenix. Tanner was a dealer for Studebaker until production quit. There are several in the Phoenix that know about Tanner, his son who took over the Volvo dealership until his retirement. Ray Tanner's grandson is in the Phoenix area with his own independent garage. I don't know if the paperwork for Ray has been intact but contact members in the Phoenix area for some help. Bill Eastburn's father was the service director at Ray Tanner during the Studebaker years and beyond.

Okay, I contacted Michell Eastburn who is the SDC President of the Phoenix Chapter. She tried to find Tanner records and tried to go thru AZ DMV but had no luck. I suppose that if no one recalls Don Stone who was in Colorado Springs in 1974, I am at a dead end.
        I appreciate your interest.

Don't give up so easily. There are 12,000 or so SDC members and this forum only reaches about 1,000 of them. there are members who have scrapbooks, other photos regional and national meet attendance records. Just be patient, but be proactive regarding asking questions. You just never know when something will turn up.

I recommend you contact Chuck Donkle (in the roster). If he doesn't know Stone ,he will be able to direct you to the long term members in Colorado Springs.

I haven't heard back from Chuck Donkle yet. Should I send another e-mail or forget it? It's possible that COVID 19 got him.

Chuck Donkle is alive and well. He hosted a recent Regional Meet.

There's a picture of your Hawk in the October 1973 Turning Wheels. It won 2nd place, and looks like it's white.

You are correct. I saw the same article. The car was originally white sand. If possible I would like to know who he sold it to. It would be another piece of the history puzzle.
