  • Gear Head Tuesday - Studebaker's Avanti: American Design Dream for the Future

A fine article by auto designer Raffi Minasian who has owned 2 Avantis and worked with Avanti designer Tom Kellogg (on projects outside of Studebaker).

Thanks for this post . Very interesting ! I have always thought that if somehow Studebaker could have kept the 53 design in development til 55, gotten all the design and engineering straightened out and then moved the 63 Avanti drive train back to 55, they might still be in business. Both were ahead of their respective times.. I can just imagine rather than looking at the 55 Chev. and Ford, on the showroom, I had seen a 53 C body , black , with red interior, 4 speed, supercharged, 289===Just imagineO man, I gotta stop.

Raffi Minasian seemed to get the story right about the Avanti, but not so about
the space race. John Glenn wasn't the first man in space, he was the 3rd behind
        Yuri Gagarin and Alan Sheppard.

Actually Glenn was # 5. Virgil Grissom was #3 and the Russian GhermanTitov was #4.
