  • Got invited; "Eyes On Design" 2020 show at Edsel Ford Estate

I've never been invited to a prestigious show, but just received word the invitation committee would like me to bring my un-restored Rockne to the field at the Edsel Ford Estate at Groose Point, MI for the 33rd "Eyes On Design" show on Fathers Day. This years theme is "Marques of Extinction." Clever!

I've only driven it locally over the past 30 years, and never trailered anything that distance. But this would require trailering for at least seven hours.

I'm not unfamiliar with secure tie-downs, and the importance of balanced tongue weight. I did once borrow a pickup and rent a u-haul trailer to bring a '63 Cruiser from Binghampton, NY to State College, PA, but that was twenty years ago.
I believe it would be foolish to pass up this opportunity to represent us on the field. But I have not yet said yes.

I understand your ambivalence. Too important to pass up, but a major commitment of time and dollars for the cause. Good luck on whatever you decide.

Brad, it is your decision but one thatis important to you and the Rockne. Think long and hard and if you want to talk about this, feel free to call me.

A quick off the cuff number to rent a truck and trailer from Uhaul would be over $800 and that doesn't include gas, food or lodging. While I would love to see you go, it's a significant commitment on your part.

Good luck with the decision but it's needs to be how much do you want to go versus any other consideration about marque exposure or peer pressure.

I'd definitely do it if I owned a restored, or nice original Rockne like yours, and was invited. I've trailered a car over 800 miles with a Ford F150 without any problem over the Rocky Mountains.

Congrat's. on the invitation. Perhaps you know of another Rockne that is closer to the show that could be substituted. It would be good exposure, but do you want to make the commitment in time and money?

On a lesser note, the only invitation only show that I remember participating in is when my '53 Commander Starliner was invited to a small show at the US Military Academy at West Point, NY. It was a nice show with mostly expensive cars and the only other Studebaker was a '63 Avanti.

EDIT: I have been to other open shows there (West Point) with that and other Studebakers, but that particular show was small and invited based on design.

EDIT II: Perhaps you could look into having the car shipped to and fro.

I realize you have been invited as an individual, Brad, but since you would in essence be representing the marque and, by extension the SDC, perhaps there are some funds available from your chapter or the national club to help with costs. Just a thought.

Special opportunity, do it if you can. I would diffidently consider a trusted friend or a professional with a an enclosed trailer. Been there and done that on several occasions, IMO it's money well spent-save yourself some of the anguish and worry about your car, and your own safety for that matter.
