avanti door sill plates

  • avanti door sill plates

    I have recently noticed some bulging around 3-4 screws that hold
    the sill plate After removing,I was surprised to find the rust that
    had formed on the underside of the vinyl covering? I guess this is
    caused by water that must seep thru the screw thread's. Car is
    never in the rain,& washed with minimal hose use! Any tips?

    You might want to check your door weatherstrips, if water is getting past them it would explain the rust there. The only other thing I can think of, is the door drains, do they dump on the sills like the rest of the Studes or drain outboard of the seals to the ground like they should?

      You might want to check your door weatherstrips, if water is getting past them it would explain the rust there. The only other thing I can think of, is the door drains, do they dump on the sills like the rest of the Studes or drain outboard of the seals to the ground like they should?

        The rubber is bonded to a steel stiffener and the assembly is no longer available. You would have to make a stainless steel plate and figure out how to remove and re-bond the rubber to it. When new ones show up they are pricelees, so priced beyond reason!

            What about the rust repair itself?
            I've noticed some bumps raising on mine, (passenger door only) would it be a haed thing to repair?

              What about the rust repair itself?
              I've noticed some bumps raising on mine, (passenger door only) would it be a haed thing to repair?

                my thought on repair is to trim the rubber away from the rust,
                then remove it & coat it with a material to stop any further
                problems. As I said earlier,my A has not been rain driven in the
                past 27 years.

                    Better place you order with Ed Reynolds. When he re-pops them they sell out fast. I ordered some at Palm Springs and told him I would pick them up in Omaha, by Omaha he was allready sold out so I ordered them again. They are $275 approx. apiece. And my 63 hasen't been in the rain since 69. And they just fell apart when I removed them.

                        I'll bet it's the right side that is bad. There seems to have been a problem with the manufacture of the right side as they separate much more ofter than the left. I don't think that it has anything to do with water leakage. In any case, they're 43 years old so perhaps it's time for them to be replaced.
