    Earnie,

The starter was re-built by a place that knows what they are doing...I mention this because less than one year before I had it re-built and found later how sheety the work was......incorrect armature, brush frame attachment point burned, and incorrect bushing in the drive end!.......and I paid $150.00 to that idiot but I was over a barrel at that point.......all new cables are used...I think #4 on the battery and starter ......timing is spot on at four degrees..I attempted to retard it a bit to kill the ping (before I found the Cam 2 leaded) ......the car would not pull away from a stop......put it back at four degrees......no problems.

I would look to cables, and starter. My R2 had that problem when I first bought it. Pulled the starter, cleaned, WD 40 on the bushings that the armature turns in and made sure the brushes moved freely in the holders. Put new cables in just because and it worked fine for years.

The other thing is timing that's a lttle too far advanced causing the strained crank.

        Earnie,

I recently threw my timing light on the car and found that the timing was two degrees advanced. Would this make a difference? I get no ping due to the fact of utilizing 110 leaded fuel...but I never considered that two degrees could cause a slow/labored hot start! Your thoughts.......
