  • Excellent November 2008 Hemmings Classic Car

Waiting upon arrival home from Lancaster was the November 2008 Hemmings Classic Car. This is an unusually interesting issue, because it is all about affordable cars of the 50s.

No Tri-Five Chevys for the umpteeth time or details of window crank variations among 2-passenger Thunderbirds; just a whole edition devoted to highlighting lesser-recognized models of various domestic makes that can generally still be bought and enjoyed for less than $10,000. (I might question a few of their selections as actually being available for those figures in good, driveable condition....but, overall, no big complaints.)

One showcased model is a really sharp 1956 Studebaker Flight Hawk in 1956 Paint Scheme 5642: White over Tangerine. Pretty. The featured Flight Hawk even has a Continental Kit and -are you ready for this- power windows![:0] Author Jeff Koch says the 1939 164.3 CID Champion engine had been "bored and stroked" to 185.6 CID by 1956; incorrect in that the engine had a 3" bore from 1939 through 1964, regardless of valve configuration or stroke. That, and the featured car has a later hood rather than the one-year-only 1956 bonnet, but no big deal.

An issue of HCC worth reading; different and enjoyable. (No, I haven't read every word, so if anyone uncovers other irregularities, kindly withhold the firing squad.) BP

    Bob,
You wouldn't happen to know if that Hawk was in Palm Springs, CA by any chance? One of our chapter members, Gene Searcy, went and visited a fellow in Palm Springs that owns Gene's old 50 Commander Convert. ( green with Tan int) Anyway, the fellow has quite a collection, including a hawk as you described, with power windows and a continental kit. I don't remember the color though, but the story that went with the car was that it was ordered for the dealer's wife.

The article states that Frank Wenzel of Palm Springs in 2002 bought the Flight Hawk from a Studebaker specialist in northern California.

What Bob Bryant said, Evan. (You can be assured there isn't another Tangerine & White / Continental Kit / Overdrive / Power Windows Flight Hawk in existance!) [8D]BP

I ate dinner on Tuesday evening with Frank at the Truck Farmer's event. He has an extensive collection, including a 1926 Arizona Sheriff that is the meet car in 2010.
