  • Help with truck vin# id

I have made friends with a nice old guy who is restoring an old Studebaker truck. He has the title and it states that it is a 60 model. I have been looking and havent seen any 60 models with one piece grills like his has. I got the vin off the plate and thought one of you guys could give him some answeres .

    E2-388
    Certified net hp 141 @3800
    max gross weight 5000
    model 4E2-112

Thats all I see on the door plate. Is there anywhere on the net I can find this info so I can show him? It has the large back window and a one piece grill is that right? The motor is a 259 and has a 3 speed with overdrive on the column.

    Thanks
    Jason

Hi, you have a '59 Scotsman that originally came with a 259 V8 motor.

4E = 1959, although many were made in early 1960.
    2 = Scotsman model with the aformentioned V8;
112 = the wheelbase in inches, so it is a short (6.5 ft.) box.

Here is a picture of a 59 Scotsman. About 4000 or so were made for the '59 model year.

Interesting, I just came across E3-348 on Sunday. It appears to be a former state truck similar to the one Frank Drumheller (studelark) had. If you post the information on Studebaker Truck Talk (http://www.network54.com/Forum/23885/) or e-mail frank off the Forum he can add your truck to his Scotsman registry.

Jason - Please note that the picture posted (by Mark) is of a standard 1959 Scotsman pickup. If the pickup came with the Deluxe Grille Package, it will have a full width fiberglass grille. This may be what you refer to as a "one piece grille." Is the grille on the truck steel or fiberglass? My next to last Studebaker pickup was/is a 1959 Scotsman with the Deluxe Grille {dress-up} Package.
Studebaker sold 4447 1959 Scotsman trucks.

As Gary said, here is a photo of a '59 Scotsman with the Deluxe grille package. Definitely different than the standard Scotty.

Thanks for all the help. It has the standard grill not the glass one. The old man has done a real nice job putting it back together. The only thing he really needs is a hood so if anyone knows of one please let me know. He has the orignal but it needs a lot of work. It would really speed up his resto if he could find a nice hood.

Now that's going to be a sweet ride when you get it finished! [8D][^]
Even without the fibreglass front grill, I would say it's definitely a "Deluxe" Scotsman.
