Memory Lane- Allington Studebaker,Van Nuys, CA

Anyone from the Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley ( Van Nuys) area that remembers this dealership from the 50's ? Owner- Bob Allington
My father was the Parts Manager for this dealership during those years, and is the reason for my life-long interest in Studes. My most vivid memory is the night ( 1955) the owner and my Dad took me ( then age 12) for a drive in a new " Lemon-Lime" 3 speed, 55 Speedster, lookin for a 55 Chevy, Corvette or 49-50 Oldsmobile to "dance" with [}]!
Don't recall if we found any willing partners, just remember all the questions and looks we got that night [^]!

Dennis, I do not remember that well about Van Nuys Blvd. in those days since Keys Motors on Lankershime Blvd. was closer to me. I was over in Pacoima by Hansen Dam. Do remember cruising up and down Van Nuys Blvd. from Bobs at Riverside Dr. to Parthenia Blvd. looking for guys that wanted to go to Roscoe Blvd. by John H. Francis Polly Tec. to race for $20. What corner was the dealer on?

The dealership, you will need to scroll to the right, which the sign
says Allington-French, is on the right.It looks to be the corner of
Delano and Van Nuys, with a Buick dealer 2 doors up.

I assume location was corner of Delano and Van Nuys per Glen's archive submittal from 1927. However, may have been relocated to another location on Van Nuys Blvd. in the 40's or 50's?

Could be, but Frost and French was on Western Ave. at 3rd. St. in down town L.A. The building in the 1927 pic. I have never seen. in 1933 they outlawed unreinforced red brick buildings and that one was probably torn down.

Not sure if you still look at this forum as this post was four years ago. Nonetheless, Bob Allington was my grandfather and just recently passed away. Before he died, he said that owning the Studebaker dealership was one of his highlights of his life. I am glad that you have great memories with him as well. He was a great man! If you have any stories that you would like to share, I would love to hear about his early life from before I was born.

Chris, Do you have any pics of the dealership from the 50's? Would love to jog my memory. And if your grandfather ever shared any stories of the area as it was in the mid 1900's? The bad thing of people passing is you have so many questions that you feel you should have asked, but didn't.

Bruce F. Allington has been listed on my site since this post in 2008, but no photographs. Most of the digital newspaper archives I've been through haven't come up with a pic or ad from anytime in the past. The digital Newspaper archives now charge a fee much like the geneology sites and that's where I have to draw the line on my legwork...
